PHOTOS: LPD Honor Guard Presents Colors Before Sox Win

On Monday, April 30, the Lexington Police Department Honor Guard presented the colors at Fenway Park, where the Red Sox topped the visiting Oakland A's, 11-6.

The Boston Red Sox ended April by evening the team's record at 11s with a win over the visiting Oakland Athletics. But, before that happened, the Lexington Police Department's Honor Guard presented the colors before the National Anthem to start the game.  In case you were wondering about the game: Starting pitcher Clay Buchholz continued to underwhelm, allowing six runs on seven hits and five walks over 6 2/3 innings. But DH David Ortiz stayed hotter than the weather, adding a pair of solo home runs to his impressive April, and Mike Aviles added a three-run homer and Darnell McDonald a two-run job as the longball-led BoSox topped the A's, 11-6.

Russell's Blast Launches Arlington Past Visiting Lexington

Arlington Left fielder Dan Russell's fourth-inning bomb down Pond Terrace gave the Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead and a much-needed spark.

With his team down 1-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning Wednesday against visiting Lexington, Arlington High’s Jonathan Matos asked his teammates, who had yet to get a hit, for a little help while he was walking off the mound. “Come on! Let’s go!” he shouted coming back to the bench. Left fielder Dan Russell must have heard him, as four batters later, with the bases loaded and one out, Russell absolutely crushed a ball over Lexington’s left fielder. Russell easily could have circled the bases, but the ball rolled down Pond Terrace, which is a ground-rule double at Spy Pond Field. Regardless, he gave his Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish on way to a 5-3 win. With right fielder Matt Garcia up next, …

Runners scheduled to run the Boston Marathon on Monday have been advised to do so with caution. Because of the expected high temperatures of nearly 90 degrees on Monday, the Boston Athletic Association (BAA) issued an email statement on Saturday morning which offered a deferment to any official runner who would like to postpone his or her participation until 2013.  “This applies to official entrants only who either have claimed or will claim their bib number packet at the John Hancock Sports & Fitness Expo through Sunday evening at the Seaport World Trade Center in South Boston,” the statement read. "Runners must claim their bib number for deferment to be an option.” The medical co-directors of the marathon, Dr. Pierre d’Hemecourt and Dr. …

Celebrate Jackie Robinson Day at Cary Library

"Jackie Robinson: A Memorabilia Exhibit" is a special one-day exhibit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Cary Memorial Library, featuring photo, autographs, cards, magazines and more from the collection of Lexington resident Stephen Schlein.

It’s like a scene straight out of a PG movie or some soda commercial: 1950s ballplayer leaves the stadium and walks with adoring young fans for a few blocks to the subway, where he stops, puts his hand on the shoulder of a boy barely older than 10 and says, “How’d you like the game, kid?” Insert jersey toss and exit stage left. Except only this was real life. The ballplayer was Jackie Robinson. And the boy, he grew up, moved to Lexington and became a Sox fan. The above memory and more will be on display at Cary Memorial Library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, April 14, in a special memorabilia exhibit celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. This one-day exhibit will feature a special collection of cards, autographs, photos, pins and magazine …

On 100th Birthday, Lexington Resident Takes the Mound at Fenway

On his 100th birthday tomorrow, April 14, Brookhaven resident Bill Hogan will throw out the first pitch at the Red Sox's second game of their 100th season at Fenway Park.

His Red Sox memories date back to the 1920s and he was in attendance the day Ted Williams hit a home run in his final at-bat, but Bill Hogan’s best Fenway memory just might be made at 4 p.m. tomorrow, April 14, the eighth game of the Sox’ 2012 season. Yes, it’ll be quite the 100th birthday gift for Hogan, who was born April 14, 1912, six days before his beloved Red Sox played their first game at Fenway Park. “I thank the good lord for leaving me here with enough strength to at least get a round in,” Hogan, a Lexington resident, told AARP in a video interview. “I don’t know much about 100-year-old pitchers, but I’ll throw the ball and see what happens.” For a while now, Hogan has been practicing his pitch with the staff members at …
