From Minuteman to Amazin'? NY Mets Select Chris Shaw in MLB Draft

The Lexington High slugger and BC commit was one of three current or future Eagles selected in the 2012 MLB draft this week.

With the 800th pick in the 26th round of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft, the New York Mets on Wednesday selected Chris Shaw, the standout first baseman and pitcher from Lexington High. News of Shaw’s selection comes less than a week after the Minutemen were bounced from postseason play following a tough 10-7 loss to the visiting Newton North Tigers. A perennial all-star and league MVP who swatted 7 home runs and struck out 95 this season for the Minutemen, Shaw's selection was no accident – but it may have almost caused one. According to ESPNBoston, Shaw was on his way to practice with the Nashua Knights of the Futures Collegiate Baseball League when he heard the news. “I laid on the horn and punched my sun roof – I probably dented …

PHOTOS: Minutemen Topped by Visiting Tigers

It's a second straight early exit for the Lexington High varsity baseball team after a 10-7 lost to Newton North in MIAA North Division 1 preliminary round playoff action on Thursday, May 31.

The game ended as it began – with Chris Shaw, MVP of his league, waiting outside the home dugout.  It was the bottom of the 9th, with one on, one out, the Minutemen trailing by three runs and Shaw in the hole. If he made it to the plate, Lexington’s senior slugger would have a chance to tie the game at 10s or put his team in the lead. But a lineout and a strikeout later, and the Minutemen’s do-or-die rally died with Shaw in the on-deck circle. And with that, Lexington High's baseball season was over. The Minutemen fell, 10-7, to the visiting Newton North Tigers during their MIAA North Division 1 preliminary round playoff game Thursday, May 31 in Lexington. Not a whole lot about this game went smoothly. It was a slow-developing, back-and-…

Russell's Blast Launches Arlington Past Visiting Lexington

Arlington Left fielder Dan Russell's fourth-inning bomb down Pond Terrace gave the Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead and a much-needed spark.

With his team down 1-0 going into the bottom half of the fourth inning Wednesday against visiting Lexington, Arlington High’s Jonathan Matos asked his teammates, who had yet to get a hit, for a little help while he was walking off the mound. “Come on! Let’s go!” he shouted coming back to the bench. Left fielder Dan Russell must have heard him, as four batters later, with the bases loaded and one out, Russell absolutely crushed a ball over Lexington’s left fielder. Russell easily could have circled the bases, but the ball rolled down Pond Terrace, which is a ground-rule double at Spy Pond Field. Regardless, he gave his Spy Ponders a 2-1 lead, which they would not relinquish on way to a 5-3 win. With right fielder Matt Garcia up next, …

Celebrate Jackie Robinson Day at Cary Library

"Jackie Robinson: A Memorabilia Exhibit" is a special one-day exhibit from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at Cary Memorial Library, featuring photo, autographs, cards, magazines and more from the collection of Lexington resident Stephen Schlein.

It’s like a scene straight out of a PG movie or some soda commercial: 1950s ballplayer leaves the stadium and walks with adoring young fans for a few blocks to the subway, where he stops, puts his hand on the shoulder of a boy barely older than 10 and says, “How’d you like the game, kid?” Insert jersey toss and exit stage left. Except only this was real life. The ballplayer was Jackie Robinson. And the boy, he grew up, moved to Lexington and became a Sox fan. The above memory and more will be on display at Cary Memorial Library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow, April 14, in a special memorabilia exhibit celebrating Jackie Robinson Day. This one-day exhibit will feature a special collection of cards, autographs, photos, pins and magazine …

Taking It Personally

Taking It Personally: On Politics and Little League

Two sides of the same coin.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks. First, the Red Sox collapsed and, then three times I was asked a question which boiled down to what best prepared me for town government. I blathered on about desire to help and all of that, but I knew the real answer. It is all about baseball. Well, baseball generally, and Little League specifically. Deep down, there really is no other sport  as far as I am concerned. I play, coach and announce hockey. I watch and announce football. I have even taken to watching soccer on TV late at night. But, given a choice, I will watch and play baseball because baseball is sport. All the rest are just games. The Red Sox collapse will not permanently scar me because I have never been overly impressed with won-…

IMAGE GALLERY: Blue Sox Bow to Chiefs

In an amazing feat of determination, the Chiefs come back from a 4-1 deficit to go to game four. Final score: 5-4.

It seemed like everything was over. The final inning and potentially the final game of the season came with the Andre Chiefs down 4-1. They came back with a huge rally starting with Matt Boleski hitting an out of the park solo home run. With confidence high and adrenaline surging, the Chiefs filled the base and the score board until victory was assured. Check out some photos from Friday night's comeback win.

Sports Week in Review, Aug. 20 - Aug. 26

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

This week, the Lexington Blue Sox continued their quest for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Intercity League championship. But, in order to make even get a shot at making league history, the Blue Sox needed to land a spot in the championship series. After a first-round bye, Lexington got all it could handle from the Reading Bulldogs in the semifinals. On Friday night, it took some late-inning heroics from Dan Graham for the Blue Sox to earn a victory in the second game of a playoff double-header. He went deep late in the game to put the top-seeded Lexington squad ahead in the series. But the Bulldogs wouldn’t go quietly, as they forced a Game 5 on Monday. As with the rest of the series, the decisive game was a nail-biter. Lexington …

Unsung Heroes Help Blue Sox to Game 2 Victory

Lexington now one win from becoming first team to win five straight Intercity League championships.

On a team studded with star-caliber talent, it’s the bottom half of the Blue Sox’s lineup that has the organization within a single victory of its fifth straight Intercity League championship. Lexington defeated the Andre Chiefs 8-1 in Game 2 of the ICL championship series at Lexington High School on Thursday night. Most of the praise for the victory has to go to the hitters in the 6-9 spots, generally some of the less heralded in the lineup. That certainly wasn’t the case on this night, as the Blue Sox took a 2-0 series lead behind Matt McEvoy, Ross Curley, Tommy Haugh and Dan Capra. They combined to go an astounding 7-for-11 with four RBIs and six runs scored. They also recorded a walk and a sacrifice. “A lot of teams, when you get down…

Blue Sox Win Game 1 of ICL Championship Series

Stellar pitching, timely hitting puts Lexington one step closer to another league title.

In a series where offense will be at a premium, the Blue Sox’s Dan Graham and Justin Wright made sure to take full advantage of the only hits they picked up in Game 1 of the Intercity League championship series against the Andre Chiefs. Graham smacked a two-run double and Wright hit his first home run of the postseason to give the Blue Sox a 3-0 victory on Thursday night and put the team one step closer to its fifth straight league title. “They’ve got, like us, multiple good pitchers,” Lexington manager Rick DeAngelis said. “They’re all first line, first rate pitchers, like us.” Prior to the start of the series, much of the talk was centered on the great pitching staffs of each club. During the regular season, the Blue Sox were first (1.81…
