Sports Week in Review, July 16 - July 22

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

The Summer Bay State Games continued around the region earlier this week, with at least one Lexington resident helping out the Metro squad. Michelle Feenstra, a rising sophomore at Lexington Christian Academy, was on the field for Metro’s girls’ lacrosse team when it handed the Northeast/Central team a loss last Saturday. One of just two rising sophomores on the Metro team, Feenstra didn’t score in her squad’s 18-11, but did plenty to contribute. On Thursday, Patch caught up with LHS golfer Jason Tzannes. Not only did he recently take first place in a Junior PGA Tour event in Gardner, but he did so while hobbled with a knee injury. Tzannes will be entering his senior year for the Minutemen in the fall. On Wednesday, the Lexington Blue Sox …

LCA Athlete Aids Lax Team in Bay State Games Win

Michelle Feenstra, a rising sophomore at Lexington Christian, is one of the youngest girls on her squad for the annual summer tournament.

WALTHAM – In person and on the sidelines, Michelle Feenstra is soft spoken and reserved. But that all changes when she steps on a lacrosse field, so says Alisa Arakelian, Feenstra’s coach for the annual Bay State Summer Games. The Lexington resident and rising sophomore at Lexington Christian Academy is among the youngest of dozens of girls competing in the lacrosse tournament this week. On the Metro squad, she’s one of just two players to recently finish freshman year. “It’s really fun. Our team, it’s not the biggest, but we all have fun together and are really connecting,” Feenstra said on Saturday, after she helped Metro defeat the Northeast/Central squad 18-11 during the second day of competition at Waltham High School. While Feenstra …

Sports Week in Review, July 9 - July 15

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

This was a good week for Lexington Post 38, as the American Legion baseball team picked up two key victories with the summer season winding down. Both wins came in dominating fashion. First, on Saturday, Lexington defeated Arlington/Belmont by 10 runs. Post 38 started off quick with a 6-0 lead and held off the opposition the rest of the way. Scoop Ruxin and Tommy McKenna stepped up and filled in on the mound. On Thursday, Ruxin was back on the mound against Concord Post 158. Lexington started a little slower this time, but cranked things up with five runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings to run away with the victory. Billy Borden entered as a pinch hitter in the fifth and had a double, a triple and four RBIs. Things didn’t go quite …

Bay State Games: 14 Saves for Foley as Metro/Southwest Beats Central

Lexington's Shane Foley's solid second half showing helped Metro/Southwest hold off Central.

Metro/Southeast kicked off its Bay State Games with a 9-7 win over Central yesterday at Wentworth Tech's Sweeney Field, on the strength of four goals from Medford's Ryan McCarthy and 14 saves from Lexington High goalie Shane Foley. "Shane really stepped up in the second half," Metro/Southeast coach Mike Simone said. "If he hadn't made a couple of those saves at the end, they might have come back to beat us." Metro/Southeast controlled yesterday's game from the start, as Lexington's Danny Gill fired in an unassisted goal late in the first quarter to put the team up 3-0.   Metro/Southeast led 6-3 at the half, and 8-5 in the fourth quarter, before Central went on a two-goal run and had a two-man advantage down 8-7 with five minutes left. …

Sports Week in Review, July 2 - July 8

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

Summer baseball is in full swing at all levels, and here at Patch we have any fan of the national pastime covered. This week, the focus was on the Bay State Games and the Lexington Blue Sox of the Intercity League. Beginning Tuesday, Lexington residents and rising seniors at Lexington High School Nick and Connor Murray participated in baseball competition at the Bay State Games. The Murray brothers played for the Metro team as it took on some of the top high school talent from across the state. Team Metro opened with a victory over the West, on Tuesday, but fell to 1-2 in the tournament with a loss to the Southeast on Wednesday afternoon. The baseball competition wrapped up on Friday, but the Bay State Games will run through much of July. …

Metro Baseball Team Drops to 1-2 in Bay State Games

Metro allowed 20 runs total in losses to Northeast and Southeast yesterday.

In Day Two of the Bay State Games, Metro kept up its gaudy offensive pace from Game One, notching five runs against Northeast and eight runs later in the day against Southeast. Problem is, Metro gave up a whole lot more runs than they scored, losing to Northeast 8-5 and Southeast 12-8 to fall to 1-2 in the tournament and put an appearance in the Gold Medal Game in serious doubt. In yesterday's final game, Roslindale's Gavin Pittore gave up eight runs --six of them earned -- to Southeast in three innings of work. Southeast opened up a 11-0 lead by the fifth inning and never looked back, though Metro mounted a six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth and final frame to close the gap to 12-8. Leftfielder Malcolm Nachmanoff led Metro with two …

Metro Takes Bay State Games Opener 9-6

Metro comes back from early four-run deficit to go 1-0.

Fourth of July weekend may have ended Monday, but the fireworks were still on display yesterday afternoon in Metro's Bay State Games opener at Bentley University's Bob DeFelice Stadium, as Metro ripped 10 hits for nine runs to beat West, 9-6. After falling behind 4-0 in the first inning to the West team, the Metro team, made up of all-stars from high schools in the metro Boston area -- including Lexington High School's Connor and Nick Murray -- cut West's lead to 4-3 in the second inning and pulled away with a five-run fourth inning en route to the win. "These kids are talented enough that you know they're not going to throw in the towel," Metro manager Steve Freker said. "I told them that they have to play at a high level all the time, …
