Buck Gives Blood, Inspires Bipartisan Support

Blood money in the best sense of the words.

The following announcement was provided by Alex Buck's campaign. Democratic State Senate Candidate Alex Buck and Republican Rotary Club member Leonard Doolan may sit on opposite sides of the political aisle, but they proved last week that they can agree on some important things. Buck, a state senate candidate running the 3rd Middlesex District Democratic Primary, approached Doolan and asked if he would donate to his campaign. Doolan thought it was important to support a local candidate and agreed. In their conversation, Doolan also mentioned the Rotary Club was sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive, and Buck donated blood.   "I saw this as a good way to help a great cause, while at the same time show how we can all come together to …

Rosh Hashanah, town celebrations and a blood drive today in and around Lexington.

1. Lexington Public Schools are closed today for Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, which is celebrated this year from sundown on Sept. 28 to nightfall on Sept. 30. According to the HuffPost Religion, Many traditional Rosh Hashanah foods, such apples and honey, raisin challah and honey cake -- are eaten, in part, as a nod to the common Rosh Hashanah greeting, "Shana tovah u'metukah," Hebrew for 'a good and sweet new year.' 2. One drop at a time.

We've all seen the signs around town asking for blood. A few of these noted that the American Red Cross has a critical need for Type O blood. The Museum of Our National Heritage has a sign at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Marrett Road asking for donors. Last week Wilson Farm had a placard by its exit.  After seeing these signs in more than four Lexington locations I went to the Red Cross website. There is a critical need for all blood types and we can help. Here’s the message from the site: “The Red Cross has issued an appeal for blood donors of all types due to a critical blood shortage across our nation.” Apparently, May and June donations were the lowest the organization has seen in more than a dozen years. According to the town website, the Tree Committee, Board of Appeals, Water Sewer Abatement Board, Special Educaiton Parent Advisory Council, Lexington Bicycle Advisory Committee and Permanent Building Committee are all meeting today.  2. 1. School's out for the summer. Today's the last day of the 2010-2011 school year for the Lexington Public Schools -- except for Estabrook, which finishes with a half-day this Friday, June 24. 2. Leary Land's on the agenda tonight for LEXHAB, which meets at 7:30 p.m. at its offices on Militia Drive.
