They want your blood. No, we're not talking about the contemplative Cullen clan from "Twilight," nor the more agressive vampires from Bon Temps in the "True Blood" TV series. Coming off a couple of down months for donations, the American Red Cross is in desperate need of blood as it's facing a critical shortage of all types. The Knights of Columbus are holding a blood drive July 27, starting at 2 p.m. and, according to road signs, the Lexington Masons are hosting a blood drive tomorrow at the National Heritage Museum. So, with that in mind, we want to know Are you a blood donor? What made you decide to give blood for the first time? If not, what's stopping you?

We've all seen the signs around town asking for blood. A few of these noted that the American Red Cross has a critical need for Type O blood. The Museum of Our National Heritage has a sign at the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Marrett Road asking for donors. Last week Wilson Farm had a placard by its exit. After seeing these signs in more than four Lexington locations I went to the Red Cross website. There is a critical need for all blood types and we can help. Here’s the message from the site: “The Red Cross has issued an appeal for blood donors of all types due to a critical blood shortage across our nation.” Apparently, May and June donations were the lowest the organization has seen in more than a dozen years. Yes I give blood regularly. Just donated last week at the Knights of Columbus, along with my 18 year old son. I think it is extremely important for those who are able to donate, to donate as often as they can. Lynnell Stern   more ›
