Could Electronic Voting Be Coming to Lexington?

A proposal for a change in Town voting bylaws would allow for electronic voting could be decided at this November's Special Town Meeting.

Joe Pato, chairman of the Recorded Voting Committee, went before the Board of Selectmen on Monday, Oct. 1, to discuss his board’s proposal to bring electronic voting to Lexington's Town Meeting. The primary goal of the warrant article would be to change current bylaws to enable electronic voting to be adopted by Lexington over a period of time. The secondary objective of the warrant article has “no substantive changes,” according to Pato, who explained that the warrant article gives power to “clarify language and preserve the existing system” of voting in town. Passage this warrant article would not create any electronic voting system, but rather just adopt the means to move towards electronic voting for future Town Meetings, Pato said. …

Special Town Meeting Set for Nov. 19

Understanding the need for a special fall Town Meeting, the Board of Selectmen passed a motion to hold one on Monday, Nov. 19.

The Board of Selectmen Monday voted to hold a special Town Meeting on Monday, Nov. 19 at Cary Hall. Anticipated warrant articles include fiscal 2013 budget adjustment, Estabrook School road access improvements, a switch to electronic voting at all Town Meetings and Vistaprint’s Tax Increment Financing (TIF) proposal. It seemed Vistaprint's urging of a TIF proposal tipped the balance in favor of holding a fall Town Meeting for the selectmen, who seemed weary that, if this wasn't voted on soon, Vistaprint may not be able to expand its lot in town, which is currently located at Ledgemont Building #2 at 95 Hayden Avenue. The board mentioned that Vistaprint hopes to contact Hobbes Brook Management regarding plans to rezone the space at …

Hi Wanda, Thanks for asking. There are three ways that you can get to the grocery specials. The first is to hover your mouse over the "More Stuff" tab in the blue navigation bar below the "Lexington Patch" banner at the top of the page until the options drop down to reveal "Grocery Specials." The second would be to scroll down the homepage and find it among the ads along the right side of the …   more ›

Lexington’s 300th: BOS Approves Parking Plans for Opening Events

300th Committee members Fay Backert and Jessie Steigerwald went before the Selectmen, and after some debate, were rewarded with some demands they had for parking.

With Lexington's big 300th birthday on the horizon, 300th Committee members Fay Backert and Jessie Steigerwald went before the Board of Selectmen seeking approval of parking allowances for the kickoff celebration. For the uninitiated, Lexington's 300th birthday bash kicks off next Saturday, Sept. 22, with an all day affair. First there will be the opening ceremonies at the Lexington High School, followed by the Country Fair and picnic at Hastings Park from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. Coinciding with this event will be the Chamber of Commerces' Artisan Fair which will take place throughout downtown Lexington. Backert and Steigerwald requested, and were granted, three loopholes towards parking in order for the celebration to be enjoyed by everyone …

Housing Limited to Half of Lowell Street Stretch of Busa Land

Selectmen delineate half the length of Busa Land streetscape for four units of affordable housing; details about housing design and community farm still TBD.

New housing will occupy no more than half of the stretch of the town-owned Busa Land along Lowell Street and that had been under consideration for as many as eight new units. In a 3-to-2 vote on Monday, July 30, the Board of Selectmen decided the property would hold four units of housing on a strip of land not exceed half of the frontage along Lowell and only as deep as the least practical need.  The nay votes belonged to selectmen Hank Manz and Peter Kelley. Manz would have preserved more of the Lowell Street frontage to allow more flexibility on the housing plan, while Kelley hoped to limit footprint to one-third of the land along Lowell Street. In later discussion, the selectmen and Town Manager Carl Valente took up a series of …

Indeed it was a complicated vote. To add a little more context, Hank actually changed his vote to vote in favor of the amendment after originally voting against. What appeared to change his mind was that the chair -- whose vote I'll admit that I did not hear -- announced that the board was 3-2 against expanding from one-third of the frontage to half. Hank then said he would vote iin favor of …   more ›

Paint-and-Sip Concept Eyeing Lexington as Possible Location

Would you patronize a place where you could eat, drink and paint?

Alcohol and artistry have long gone hand-in-hand, if not always blatantly. But that’s exactly the relationship one company is looking at bringing to Lexington.  Stan Finch, a representative from Brush and Goblet, was before the Board of Selectmen on Monday, July 30, to present a concept for a “paint-and-pour” business and test the waters before a possible future request for a liquor license. According to Finch, the Brush and Goblet would couple art instruction with a beer and wine bar. Classes of 20 to 30 or so would receive painting materials and instruction on painting a well known piece while also being able to purchase drinks from the bar. “We think there is an opportunity to bring this kind of business here,” said Finch, who noted the…

I drove from Lexington to Maynard to attend one of these painting classes at Paint and Pour. It was a very quiet , non rowdy activity , just a group of women quite focused on painting and following the instructor's guidance. Some were sipping wine but a painting class certainly does not lend itself to a bar type atmosphere. Lexington town officials should welcome this type of business into the …   more ›
