Week in Review, May 7 to 13

A car fire extinguished, a committee formed, a candidate emerges, a streetscape's considered and a concert is held.

This week started of with a bang -- a few of them actually -- when four tires blew out during a car fire that torched a Toyota on Monday outside of the LexMedia headquarters.  The car's owner, a sports-reporting volunteer at LexMedia, escaped with singed hair after attempting to douse the fire -- which may have started with a cigar left lit -- with a cup of water he fetched from inside the office. On Tuesday morning, we reported Lexington Police are investigating a rash of vandalism that occurred early Sunday morning, when vandals spraypainted property in the Estabrook area Later Tuesday, the Lexington School Committee heard Superintendent of Schools Paul Ash's plan to improve enrollment predictions and voted to, among other things, form …

Multimedia: Car Fire Totals a Toyota Outside LexMedia

A LexMedia volunteer lost his car to a fast-moving fire on May 9, right outside the offices at Avalon at Lexington Hills.

Shortly before 4 p.m. today, May 9, Jim Baker’s plans for the evening changed in a big way. A former sportswriter for the Boston Herald, Baker had found a great retirement gig covering high school sports for LexMedia. On Monday afternoon, he dropped by the LexMedia headquarters at Avalon Lexington Hills to do some editing of a recent Lexington High School softball game against Burlington High. And then, he figured he’d head out and cover another game. But as he went to leave, he noticed a flame in his Toyota and everything changed.  Baker said he had a cigar in the car, but didn’t think he’d left it lit. When he returned to his car after an hour or so spent editing film, he saw a small, flickering flame between the seats. “I didn’t know …

I'm curious if you are sure that you had a cigar that was lit? Amonth ago I lost my silver toyota camy 2007 to a car fire that started between the seats. I don't smoke. The firemen said if my windows were open it would have been worse. Any comment from the owner would be appreciated. I feel it was a malfunction in the car. lyn474@comcast.net   more ›
