PHOTOS: 4th of July Carnival Opens Tonight; Watch Hastings Park Morph

The Lexington Lions Club's annual Fourth of July Carnival opens at 6 p.m. today, July 3, but the equipment arrived Sunday took shape on Monday at Hastings Park.

Autobots they are not, but carnival rides came together pretty quickly on Monday, July 2, as Hastings Park transformed into the Lexington Lions Club's 56th annual Fourth of July Carnival.  The carnival, which runs through this Saturday, July 7, will be slightly smaller than in years past, a result of its relocation across Worthen Road due to fields work at the Center Recreation Complex. However, a Fiesta Shows rep on-site Monday said the workers and rides were adapting well to the new digs.  It's unclear exactly which rides or attractions were lost to the relocation, but many popular rides have returned from past years, including Freak Out, Vertigo, Tilt-a-Whirl and, of course, the carousel. Notably absent will be the Ferris wheel, which …

Lexington Lions Club's Fourth of July Carnival Lineup

Fireworks, field games, rides and more.

The annual Lexington Lions Club Carnival comes to town next week and will claim a slightly different spot around the town’s center. Ongoing fields work has forced the 56th annual Fourth of July carnival to move over to Hastings Park from its regular location beside the Center Recreation Complex. According to plans presented earlier this month, the carnival will be largely the same as it’s been in the past, although slightly smaller due to the plot and configuration of the Hastings Park site. Setup is scheduled to begin on Sunday, July 1, with the carnival’s opening slated for the evening of Tuesday, July 3. The Bicentennial Band will play on opening day, and fireworks are planned for Thursday, July 5, as well as an early opening that day …

I stopped by the carnival earlier today and spoke with members of the Lions Club. They said the best time to tell folks to arrive for the fire works is 9-9:15 p.m. As they display will be shot off from inside the track, possible viewing locations include the baseball field bleachers, behind the Hayden Recreation Center and the carnival itself. -- PB   more ›

Five Things You Need to Know Today: July 1

Fire Chiefs, a carnival and patriotic PB&Js in and around Lexington.

1. Keith Hoyle takes the helm as interim chief of the Lexington Fire Department today as former LFD Chief William Middlemiss, who begins his retirement. 2. It's Day 2 of Lexington Lions Club's 55th annual Fourth of July carnival. Today's hours are from 6 to 11 p.m. 3. Yes, Barrett and Company's HQ is a bit beyond Lexington's borders, but they are offering an interesting way to celebrate -- and support our troops -- on this patriotic holiday weekend. Barrett and Co. is collecting donations of peanut butter, jelly and Marshmallow Fluff for Operation American Soldier. 4. Leinenkugel is one of the oldest breweries in the United States, and still most people avoid pronouncing the proper name. But you don't need to say the name to drink (taste) …

Fourth of July Carnival Coming Up

The Lexington Lions Club's 55th annual Fourth of July carnival runs from June 30 to July 4.

Independence Day is still nearly a week away, but the holiday weekend is starting early here in Lexington as the Lions Club’s 55th annual Fourth of July carnival kicks off Thursday, June 30 at the Center Playground on Worthen Road. Folks both in- and outside the Lions Club look at the carnival as an official start to summer, according to Janet Perry, second vice president for the Lexington Lions Club. “That’s what we think,” said Perry. “It’s a real kind of a family event. Everybody seems to have a good time and if you live in town a long time, you get to see a lot of people who you don’t get to see a lot otherwise. It’s kind of nice that way. It brings the town together.” The carnival, a fundraiser for the Club, is always on or around the…
