Beware of Scams During Year-End Charitable Giving

Taxpayers have until midnight Dec. 31 to donate to their favorite non-profits. However, make sure you know who actually gets your money.

Non-profit organizations hold a very unique status in society. Unlike corporations, non-profits can avoid payment of federal income tax–and in most cases state tax — if they organize and operate to promote certain causes, which include "charitable, religious, educational," among others. Now, with only days left in the 2012 tax year, many non-profits will make last minute requests for donations because donors also receive a tax benefit — they can deduct the value of the money or property made to the organization. Philanthropy Study: How Charitable is Lexington?

According to one survey, the town ranks toward the top of 28,000 communities nationwide and exceeds the national giving average. Does this surprise you?

When it comes to philanthropic giving, one study says New Englanders are frostier than the region’s winters, but Lexington residents are more charitable than Massachusetts as a whole. The Chronicle of Philanthropy's recently release  "How America Gives" study reported that residents in Lexington’s two zipcodes average a median contribution of $5,162 against a median discretionary income of $129,946 for a percentage of income given of slightly less than 4 percent in 2008, the tax year for which data was collected. With that level of generosity, the town ranks toward the top of 28,725 communities accounted for in the study. Meanwhile, New England was cast as the country’s stingiest region.
