In celebration of a new tradition, "Giving Tuesday," here's a list of local organizations where you could make donations or volunteer.

Luckily, there are many ways you can help in Lexington and throughout the region. Here are just a few opportunities to reach out this holiday season: Know of some other places in the neighborhood or around Concordwhere you can give back this holiday season? Tell us in the comments or tweet @LexingtonPatch with the hashtag #givingTuesday.

The 300 Anniversary Celebration Committee announces that the Musket Ball, scheduled for Nov. 17, is being rescheduled to next spring. It recently became apparent that the ticket sale goal would not be reached in time and feedback from the public has indicated that numerous residents who would like to attend are unable to for two primary reasons: The proximity of the date to Thanksgiving and the recent disruption to the lives of friends and families due to the hurricane last week. A number of people have expressed the desire to be with those in affected areas or to donate discretionary income to relief efforts at this time. All are in agreement they would like to celebrate at this event, but at a more convenient and appropriate time. The…

Lexington resident Frank McLaughlin, a ramp transport driver for FedEx based at Logan Airport, will receive the FedEx Humanitarian Award in Memphis, Tenn. later this month for his act of heroism last December.
“What the hell am I doing?” The shock of it all poured over him as his head broke the surface of the icy lakewater he’d later learn measured a meager 36 degrees on that balmy December day. It was a fleeting thought, though, the kind that must be quickly forgotten when a man’s life is at stake. So that's what Frank McLaughlin did. He pushed the fear from his mind and started swimming toward the other man in the water. That man was Jerry Paine. A husband and father to a young son, Paine and his family had moved here from Texas in 2007, settling on the shores of Nutting Lake because of the recreational options its waters offered. Rarely did Paine go out on the water alone, but on this day he headed out with three rods, three different lures, …

The following feature was provided by Judy Bass, communications specialist for Minuteman High School in Lexington. Most teenagers like to hang out with friends, go to the movies, and play sports. To those typical pursuits, Bijan Bowen can add one that’s quite offbeat – creating iPad and iPhone apps that have garnered praise as well as users. In June, Bowen, 18, of Newton, graduated from Minuteman High School in Lexington, where he studied Programming and Web Development. He said he wanted to attend Minuteman rather than his hometown high school because he felt Newton didn’t seem to offer the same in-depth instruction in computers. In fact, computers have long fascinated Bowen, who, as a child, liked to modify video games to make them …

Help showcase people who are doing great things in your community with our new feature, Count Us In.
Your neighbor who volunteers at the library, your child’s bus driver, and the Little League coach in your community may not seem to have much in common at first glance. But Patch’s new initiative, Count Us In, aspires to bring together all Good Samaritans by highlighting residents who are exemplary at making your community a more positive place. Partnering with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care (HPHC), Count Us In aims to illustrate HPHC's values. They believe that “amazing things happen when people work together” and that is why we want to share stories about just that. If you know someone who exemplifies being a good neighbor, volunteer or teacher—or someone who has simply helped the community in an inspiring way—please tell us about it in the…
