Police Chief Comments After Conkey Sentenced for Dempsey Murder

LPD Chief Mark Corr speaks of delayed justice after a convicted killer is sentenced to life in prison for the previously unsolved 1992 murder of a Lexington resident.

After convicted killer Craig Conkey was sentenced to life in prison last week for the previously unsolved 1992 murder of Kathleen Dempsey, Patch reached out to Lexington Police Chief Mark Corr for comment. Here is his response: A television program recently highlighted the story of 1st Lt. Billie Harris of the 355 Fighter Group who was shot down over Normandy, France in 1944. His wife waited until 2006 before she learned that her husband, reported as missing in action, was in fact killed and buried with honors in Normandy. When asked if she found closure in finally learning her husband’s fate, she said no, there was only acceptance. When asked about the red tape and mistakes that were made, the proud widow simply said, there is forgiveness…

Twenty Years Later, Justice at Last for Lexington Murder Victim

In Middlesex Superior Court on Tuesday, July 3, Craig Conkey was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to the previously unsolved 1992 murder of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey.

Her family entered the courtroom and exchanged handshakes and hugs with Lexington Police past and present. “I’m glad we got here,” one of them said. It was just before noon and just shy of 143 months after the day they lost their daughter, sister and friend. At last, they were here, in Middlesex Superior Court, for a bit of belated justice in the 1992 murder of Kathleen Dempsey. Craig Conkey, the man authorities say entered Dempsey’s basement apartment on Lexington’s Ridge Road and brutally murdered the 31-year-old, on Tuesday pleaded guilty to those acts, committed in the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 1992. He was sentenced to life in prison with the eligibility of parole after 15 years. Closure didn't come when Conkey, now a twice-…

VIDEO: Prosecutor Says Family's Resilience Helped Close Dempsey Murder

Minutes after Craig Conkey was sentenced to life in prison for the previously unsolved 1992 murder of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey, Assistant District Attorney Michael Fabbri said he was humbled by her family's fortitude.

After convicted killer Craig Conkey left Middlesex Superior Court Tuesday shackled with his second life sentence, this one for the 1992 murder of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey, the prosecutor's only words were for the victim's family. After years of investigation, it was new forensic techniques and the suspect's own words that helped close the cold case of the, but Michael Fabbri, an assistant district attorney in the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, said Dempsey's family helped bring her killer to justice. “We were driven to stay with this case by the fortitude, the resilience, the sticktoitivness, if you will, by Evelyn Tobin, John, the entire family,” said Fabbri. “We thank them for keeping us on top of this, and we do hope …

Week in Review: March 25 to March 31

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

A busy week this one was. There was the start of annual Town Meeting, a brush fire, a few arrests and a court appearance by an accused killer. Monday, March 26 was the opening night of 2012’s annual Town Meeting, and during the second session on Wednesday members voted to approve zoning amendments to allow residential use and residential occupations in the Lexington Center Business District, but shot down a proposal to allow taller buildings and a greater floor area ratio. Amidst town government headlines on Tuesday morning, Raising Lexington columnist Audra Myerberg explained why her “momtourage” is one accessory she simply can’t do without. Later in the day, a large brush fire broke out in the conservation land between Justin Park and …

Court: Conkey's Competent to Enter Guilty Plea

In Middlesex Superior Court today, March 30, a doctor and judge declared Craig Conkey competent to plead guilty to second-degree murder in the previously unsolved 1992 killing of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey.

Saying a trial would be a waste of time and taxpayer dollars, Craig Conkey today said he wants to plead guilty to the 1992 murder of Lexington resident Kathleen Dempsey. “I’ve been waiting for this a long time, to just come in and plead guilty,” Conkey told the judge, adding that he’s willing to waive rights in his defense. “There’s no need to investigate it. I’m guilty. I confessed. Everything I said in the statement to the police was true.” Conkey was appearing in Middlesex Superior Court for a March 30 status hearing, following an examination by a doctor to determine whether he was competent to stand trial and make decisions for himself. The evaluation came at the request of his attorney, Bernard Grossberg, who had become concerned over…
