Mass. Dems Say Brown's Liberal Reputation Will Cost Warren Votes

In our inaugural “Blue Commonwealth" survey, influential Democrats paint an early picture for November's general election.

A majority of influential Massachusetts Democrats think Scott Brown's reputation of being a "liberal conservative" will cost Elizabeth Warren votes from those Massachusetts voters who usually vote Democratic. That's the main finding of Patch's Inaugural Blue Commonwealth survey. When Patch asked if Democrats think that so far Elizabeth Warren has effectively explained how she will push for traditional Democratic issues, like women's rights, education for all and vote against corporate greed, the majority said she had. Forty responses were collected, a majority of which agreed Brown is making inroads with traditionally Democratic voters. One hundred twenty three Massachusetts Democrats were surveyed last week in Patch’s inaugural Blue …

Katie Curley-Katzman wrote, "Patch will be conducting Red Commonwealth and Blue Commonwealth surveys throughout the 2012 election season in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and progressives..." Let us let dispense with the idea of 'conservatives' being compared to 'progressives'. Being liberal does not translate to being progressive... see Greece, Spain, Italy and France. …   more ›

Lexington's Barrett Eyes Fargo's Senate Seat

Touting himself as a Democratic candidate with both experience and fresh ideas, Lexington resident Mike Barrett has declared his candidacy for the Third Middlesex Senate seat currently held by Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln.

After nearly two decades out of the public eye, Lexington resident Mike Barrett has his sights set on a state Senate seat and is touting an unlikely combination of experience and fresh ideas as a means to get him there. Barrett, a former state legislator who left politics 17 years ago after unsuccessful bid for governor in the 1994 Democratic primary, has announced his candidacy for the 2012 Democratic nomination for the Third Middlesex state Senate seat currently held by Susan Fargo, a Lincoln Democrat. On Wednesday, Barrett told Patch he feels now’s the right time to get back to politics because his kids are entering college, he’s in the right place in his career and the district needs a strong Democratic candidate to face a “credible” …

About Town

About Town: Elizabeth Warren Impresses Local Dems

At a private party last night, Aug. 16, in Lexington.

Elizabeth Warren slipped into a private Lexington home Tuesday night and met with members and friends of the Lexington Democratic Town Committee. “It was short notice, so there wasn’t a lot of time to find a larger or more appropriate venue,” said Robert Peters, co-chair of the committee. The venue was private, but the evening’s events were shared. Bob said he stopped counting at 60 attendees and suspects the count was a bit higher. According to a quick search of the internets, Warren is an attorney and a professor of law, who serves as assistant to President Barack Obama and is part of the Executive Office of the President. Her duties there are varied and many, which is why Web chatter, Democrats and some activists are looking to see …

Grassroots and Root Vegetables

Three local advocates have planted their political efforts along the periphery of the Lexington Farmers Market.

Three local women have planted their grassroots campaign next to the Lexington Farmers Market. On Tuesday, July 26, Margaret Heitz, Melinda Walker and Francesca Bini Bichisecchi shopped for support for Democrats and the Obama campaign in 2012 just outside the market, a popular spot to pick up local produce and artisan products. “In recent campaigns, democrats and progressives in Lexington worked really hard to get candidates elected across the state,” said Walker. “We want to build on a foundation that we think was really strong in Lexington.” Heitz, who organizes the Tuesday efforts, said the stumping was part of Organizing for America’s “I’m In” campaign to re-elect President Obama and Democrats up and down the ticket in the 2012. “We’re…
