One seat, two Republicans, five Democrats, retiring incumbent. With three weeks remaining before the Sept. 6 primary, that's an equation for a lot of interest in the race for the Third Middlesex state senate seat.
State politics swarmed West Concord last night for a League of Women Voters-hosted candidates forum featuring all seven state senate hopefuls Third Middlesex District that drew a crowd so large that organizers and public safety officials had to turn attendees away from the Harvey Wheeler Community Center. The Third Middlesex District, currently represented by retiring state Sen. Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln, includes Bedford, Carlisle Chelmsford, Concord, Lincoln, Waltham and Weston, along with parts of Lexington (precincts 3, 8 and 9) and Sudbury. Of the seven candidates, two are Republicans and five are Democrats, including Lexington's Mike Barrett, who declared his intentions to run prior to Fargo's retirement announcement. With three weeks …
Public safety officials and organizers had to thin the crowd considerably before the seven candidates for state senate in the Third Middlesex District could weigh in on the issues during an Aug. 15 candidates forum in Concord.
It’s probably been a little while now since the turnout for a candidates’ forum in the Third Middlesex District was a part of the story, but that changed this year. After the announcement in February that state Sen. Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln, would not seek a ninth term, a handful of new Democratic candidates emerged to join those who had already announced their intentions to run. Concord Democrats Joe Kearns Goodwin and Mara Dolan, along with Alex Buck of Chelmsford and Joe Mullin from Weston, threw their hats in the race, joining Republicans Greg Howes of Concord and Sandi Martinez of Chelmsford, and Mike Barrett, a Lexington Democrat, all of whom had declared candidicay before Fargo revealed her retirement plans. The excitement and …

Patch asked political influencers state-wide to react to the news Paul Ryan will be Mitt Romney's running mate.
An overwhelming majority of influential Republicans from Massachusetts say Mitt Romney's choice of running mate, Paul Ryan, will galvanize the state GOP: that’s the finding of a Red Commonwealth Snap Poll survey of influential conservatives sent out after Saturday morning's announcement. When Patch asked Massachusetts Republicans if Ryan as vice president would help undecided Massachusetts voters, the answers were split down the middle with half saying they strongly agree and the other half saying they strongly disagree. "He is incredibly smart and can convey concepts in easy-to-understand language," one respondent said was an advantage to having Ryan on the Romney ticket. Others noted Ryan's youth, ability to articulate himself and …
Patch asked political influencers to react to the news Paul Ryan will be Mitt Romney's running mate.
Massachusetts Democrats believe that with Rep. Paul Ryan on the Romney ticket, Democrats can win by running against Ryan's existing budget plans, particularly his proposal for Medicare. In a Blue Commonwealth Snap Poll survey sent out shortly after Romney announced Ryan will be his running mate, Massachusetts Democrats reacted to the decision. "(The decision) defines Romney as a conservative who aligns himself with the tea party," one respondent said. "The Ryan Budget is regarded as "extreme" by its detractors. The Ryan Budget is controversial and Obama-Biden have to keep playing that card in a fitting manner," another political influencer answered. When asked if Romney's choice would help the Obama-Biden ticket win over Massachusetts …

Patch's third installment in The Romney Effect series shows how long-time residents and census data paint a nuanced picture of "Romney's home town."
Do you want the low down about Belmont? Just ask "Raven." A prolific writer on the Democratic Underground message board, Raven told its 175,000 readers that you can learn a lot about Romney by looking at where he has lived for the past four decades. And he contends that Belmont mirrors the candidate for president: wealthy and privileged. "The people there live in 5,000-10,000 sf mansions on 1/4-acre parcels of land. They have summer homes in gated communities on the Cape. They have maids, landscapers, personal trainers and they send their kids to private schools like the Belmont Hill School. They commute to Boston in very expensive cars and would find it unthinkable to take the 'T,'" said Raven, who states he or she grew up near the …

Stein, a Lexington resident, and her running mate Cheri Honkala, were among five people arrested during a sit-in at a Philadelphia bank protesting housing foreclosures.
The campaign trail doesn’t always include stops in police cars and courthouses, but Jill Stein is not your typical presidential candidate. The Lexington resident and Green Party presidential nominee was arrested yesterday, Aug. 1, during a sit-in at a Philadelphia bank protesting housing foreclosures. Stein and her running mate, Cheri Honkala, were among five people arrested after about 50 party supporters staged an “Occupy Fannie Mae” protest. Watch the video posted to your right to see Jill Stein rallying the crowd before her arrest. According to an email from Stein’s campaign, the protest was originally called for by the Poor People’s Economic Rights Campaign to demand that Fannie Mae halt foreclosure proceedings against two …

Lexington Republican Jeff Semon, a congressional candidate in the Fifth District, announces the endorsement of Susan Pope, a former state rep from the 13th Middlesex District.
The following announcement was provided by the Jeff Semon's campaign. 5th District Congressional Candidate Jeff Semon, a Republican from Lexington, is proud to announce that former State Representative for the 13th Middlesex District, Susan Pope, has endorsed his candidacy. Semon is running to return robust economic growth to America and restore fiscal responsibility to Washington. Pope said of Semon, “The country is in need of good, intelligent, hard-working and Constitutionally-bound candidates that will listen, understand the facts, strive to improve the shaky economy, and work for you, the constituents. It is for those reasons that I endorse Jeff Semon for Congress in Massachusetts 5th District” Pope served the citizens of Lincoln, …

Says that, if elected to represent the Third Middlesex District in the State Senate, he will offer a business-friendly approach to job creation based on 20 years of experience in the field.
In a recent press release, Greg Howes, a Concord Republican seeking the Third Middlesex State Senate seat long held by Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln, contrasted his private sector experience with that of Sandi Martinez, a Chelmsford Republican and his opponent in the Republican Primary. Howes charges that Martinez, a recurring GOP candidate in the Third Middlesex District, lacks workplace experience to understand job growth, and suggests his combination of public and private experience "contrasts sharply with the incredible lack of credible business experience in Martinez.” “She doesn’t know the pains of having to pay the highest rates in the nation for unemployment insurance because she has never had to pay employees,” said Howes, who owns and …

In our inaugural “Blue Commonwealth" survey, influential Democrats paint an early picture for November's general election.
A majority of influential Massachusetts Democrats think Scott Brown's reputation of being a "liberal conservative" will cost Elizabeth Warren votes from those Massachusetts voters who usually vote Democratic. That's the main finding of Patch's Inaugural Blue Commonwealth survey. When Patch asked if Democrats think that so far Elizabeth Warren has effectively explained how she will push for traditional Democratic issues, like women's rights, education for all and vote against corporate greed, the majority said she had. Forty responses were collected, a majority of which agreed Brown is making inroads with traditionally Democratic voters. One hundred twenty three Massachusetts Democrats were surveyed last week in Patch’s inaugural Blue …
A Lexington Republican seeking to unseat Democrat Ed Markey in the 5th District, Jeff Semon says "common sense knows no language or ethnic barrier," in announcing the launch of jeffen2012.com
During campaign season, candidates choose their words wisely. And Lexington Republican Jeff Semon, a congressional candidate in Massachusetts' Fifth District, hopes one letter can make a lot of difference as he attempts to unseat Democrat Ed Markey. In an attempt to reach more residents in more communities, Semon has launched jeffen2012.com, a Spanish language campaign website he says is the first by a major candidate in Massachusetts. His standard website is jeffin2012.com. “Today is the beginning of the end of empty promises and political pandering to the voters of Massachusetts’ 5th District.” Semon said in a statement. The website debut, a move touted by party officials, came earlier this month in Framingham when Semon partnered with …
