VIDEO: Meet New Fire Chief John Wilson

A lifelong resident and LFD veteran, Wilson is a popular choice to lead the Lexington Fire Department.

Lexington looked far and wide, and twice over, before determining the candidate most qualified to become its next fire chief had been in the department all along. It won’t be so difficult the next time around, according to John A. Wilson, the 27-year LFD veteran who was sworn in as chief on Wednesday, May 23. “My replacement’s going to come from here,” said Wilson, a former fire captain. “There won’t even be a question.” That’s not to say Wilson isn’t in it for the long haul, but rather that the lifelong Lexington resident plans to make professional development a priority. “I have a long career left, but this is the start of a new career for me,” Wilson, 47, told Patch in an interview after accepting the job earlier this month. “I want to …

Captain Wilson Tapped to Lead LFD as New Chief

Capt. John A. Wilson was named Lexington’s next Fire Chief earlier this week. Here are a few things Town Manager Carl Valente and Interim Fire Chief Keith Hoyle had to say about the appointment.

The appointment this week of Capt. John A. Wilson as Lexington’s new Fire Chief has his colleagues, his boss and the man he’s replacing lauding the choice of a Lexington native and LFD veteran to lead the department. Wilson emerged as the top choice after a multi-step, nationwide recruitment process that included multiple requests for candidates. He’ll take over May 23 from Keith Hoyle, a retired former chief in Amherst, who has been serving as interim chief since the retirement of former Chief Bill Middlemiss.  “John's appointment is an excellent choice,” Hoyle wrote in an email to Patch. “He is a lifelong Lexington resident who has a unique knowledge of the history and operations of the Lexington Fire Department. He has some ideas for …

Report: Capt. Wilson Named LFD's Next Chief

John Wilson, a Lexington resident and 27-year member of the Fire Department, will be the next chief, according to the Lexington Fire Fighters Local 1491.

There were two candidate searches and some input from a consultant, but in the end, it seems the right man for the job was right here the whole time. Captain John Wilson, a Lexington resident and 27-year member of the Lexington Fire Department, has been chosen as the department's next chief. According to a post on the Lexington Fire Fighter's Local 1491 website, Interim Chief Keith Hoyle broke the news to the firehouse yesterday, May 1. Town Manager Carl Valente told Patch he'll be issuing a press release later today. The post on the Lexfire.org website offers congratulations to Wilson and his family, and says Wilson will take over the chief's duties on May 23. "Captain Wilson is a 27-year member of the Lexington Fire Department and has …

LFD's Next Fire Chief could be Named Next Month

Two candidates remain and final interviews should finish up this week.

The search for Lexington’s next fire chief could be coming to an end nearly a year after the last one announced his retirement. Town Manager Carl Valente said Tuesday that he’ll be finishing finalist interviews in the next few days, could make an offer next week and may be ready to announce a new hire in early May. Though he wouldn’t disclose the identities of the two finalists, Valente said one candidate is local, one is national and both would be a good fit for the department. “The two finalists I have are both excellent,” said Valente. “It’s going to be a struggle to make a decision between the two.” Whoever is tapped as the next chief will take the reins from interim Chief Keith Hoyle, who came aboard last July following the retirement…

Town Manager's Tuesday: Finding a Fire Chief and Special Town Meeting

While the Nov. 14 special Town Meeting went smoothly, finding a new fire chief is proving more difficult than anticipated.

Fire Chief Search: Many of you know that Fire Chief Bill Middlemiss retired on June 30. Retired Amherst Fire Chief Keith Hoyle has been doing a fabulous job as the interim Lexington Fire Chief, while we search for a permanent replacement. Unfortunately, our search for a new Chief has gone more slowly than anticipated. Our recruitment effort yielded only a small number of qualified candidates. We have reopened the search, therefore, to see if we can expand our pool of applicants. Stay tuned. Special Town Meeting – On Monday, Nov. 14 there was a special Town Meeting that took the following actions: On a positive note, the town’s FY12 revenues are expected to be $1.5 million greater than projected when we went to Town Meeting in the Spring. I…

Hard to believe that the loyal and hard working firefighters that are already "onboard"don't have an appropriate candidate. This could be a case of "a prophet isn't recognized in his own home".   more ›
