Michael Pelgro has been serving as acting district attorney in Middlesex County.
Governor Deval Patrick announced this afternoon he has appointed Marian T. Ryan as Middlesex County District Attorney (DA), according to a press release issued by Patrick's office. Ryan, who currently serves as the Middlesex DA's general counsel, will assume the responsibilities for the Middlesex County DA's Office as DA Gerald Leone recently stepped down from his post to join a private law firm. A 30-year veteran of the Middlesex County DA's office, Ryan has served as general counsel and chief of the office's elder and disabled unit, the press release said. Gov. Deval Patrick plans to name a successor next week to outgoing Middlesex County District Attorney Gerry Leone, according to the State House News Service.
Gov. Deval Patrick has named First Assistant District Attorney Michael Pelgro as the acting Middlesex County District Attorney to replace Gerry Leone. Patrick, who made the announcement in a statement on Friday, April 12, plans to announce a permanent appointment to fill out Leone's term next week, according to the Lowell Sun. Voters will elect a new DA in the biennial election in 2014. In January, Leone announced he would not seek a third term. In March, Leone announced he would join a private law firm. Officials in district attorney offices around the country are showed support for slain Texas prosecutors with black ribbons yesterday.
Black ribbons were donned by the staff of Middlesex District Attorney’s Office as they joined prosecutors in Massachusetts and across the country in signifying their solidarity and compassion for prosecutors who have recently been killed in Texas. “Everyday the staff of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office protects and serves our communities by standing up and speaking for victims without a voice,” said District Attorney Gerry Leone in a press release Thursday. “Prosecutors and all law enforcement in the Commonwealth make our communities safer while at times putting themselves in harms way on behalf of others. Leone will join the law firm of Nixon Peabody on April 29.
Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone is stepping down from his office to join the law firm of Nixon Peabody, the same firm former Sen. Scott Brown earlier this month said he was joining. An announcement from Nixon Peabody says Leone will join the firm as a partner in the government investigations and white collar defense practice beginning April 29. A woman at the Middlesex District Attorney's office confirmed the news, but did not have further details. Leone was first elected as Middlesex district attorney in 2006, and his current term in office was up in 2014. He previously stated he would not run for reelection at the end of his term. John Kerry, who was just approved as the next Secretary of State, stopped by his old stomping grounds yesterday for a visit.
The Middlesex District Attorney's office had a special guest yesterday. Middlesex DA Gerry Leone welcomed John Kerry, who on Tuesday was confirmed by the U.S. Senate as the next Secretary of State. Kerry was a senator for Massachusetts from 1985 until his resignation to take up his new position earlier this week. The stop was part of a tour Kerry is taking around the state as he prepares to take on his new responsibilities. His choice to stop by the Middlesex District Attorney's office was also a chance to catch up on an old place of employment. Three students from Lexington High School were chosen by their peers as the winners of the fourth annual Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office PSA Project, District Attorney Gerry Leone announced yesterday, June 21.
