PHOTOS: Saturday Trick-or-Treating a Sweet Treat in Lexington

Families around Lexington re-stage Halloween for the kids.

Saturday, Nov. 5 became Halloween for many kids young and old in Lexington this year. The temporary postponement of the spooky and sweet holiday did not dampen spirits as many families took to the streets to Trick-or-Treat. Carved pumpkins were lit on many doorsteps, and faux graveyards were righted after the wind and snow brought by last weekend's nor'easter. Aside from many downed branches and a few remaining snowpiles, the evening seemed just like previous Halloween nights.   It was chilly outside, but the lure of candy was just too tempting! It was warming to see a community willing to re-stage a much-loved kids activity - with many keeping their decorations lit and set-up ... and being ready to answer the door throughout the evening…

What's Your Favorite Halloween Candy? (POLL)

Now that the Halloween stuff has all happened here in Lexington, we want to know what kind of candy you're pilfering from your kids.

Trick-or-treaters finally hit the neighborhoods last night, piling onto the candy caches many accumulated Thursday afternoon during the Lexington Retailers Association's Trick or Treat with local businesses. Both custumed candy collections were pushed back from Monday, Oct. 31, because last Saturday night's October storm left much of the town in a state police felt was unsafe for trick-or-treating on Halloween night.  But, now that the all of the Halloween stuff has happened here in Lexington, we want to know what kind of candy takes you back to the days when you were trick-or-treating rather than taking Mounds bars from your babies. What we don't want is to hear about things like Almond Joys and sesame candies. Those are acquired tastes. …

Week in Review: Oct. 30 to Nov. 5

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

Last week's biggest newsmaker arrived eight days ago in the form of a pre-Halloween nor'easter that downed tree limbs and powerlines, knocked out power, closed streets, sidewalks and schools and nearly blew trick-or-treaters into next week.  It took the town the better part of the week to recover from the storm as work crews cleared impassable streets and sidewalks a NSTAR plugged away at returning power to the thousands of customers without it. On Sunday and Monday, places like the library and local coffee shops and even the comfort center set up at the high school were packed with people looking to warm up and charge cell phones. By Tuesday, things were looking well enough that officials suggested that trick-or-treating Saturday night …

Question of the Day

Share Your Storm Experiences on Patch (POLL)

Take our poll, post your pics and share your storm-related stories in the comments section.

It's been a nearly week-long recovery after last Saturday's October storm struck Lexington, littering sidewalks and roadways with downed tree limbs and leaving thousands powerless. But the town had begun to bounce back by Wednesday and was overrun with trick-or-treaters during the Lexington Retailers Association's event yesterday afternoon. To Recap: The early season snowfall knocked many sidewalks, streets and traffic signals around town were offline and, according to NSTAR estimates, left as much as 70 percent of the town without electricity. That led to officials calling off school for Monday and Tuesday and advising parents against taking their children trick-or-treating around town on Oct. 31, Halloween night. A shelter was set up at …

PHOTOS: Trick-or-Treaters Take Over Lexington Center

Lexington Center was swarming with costumed children and patient parents all afternoon Thursday, Nov. 3, as the Lexington Retailers Association's 10th annual Trick or Treat with Lexington businesses event drew an impressive crowd.

A three-day delay did little to diminish participation in the Lexington Retailers Association's 10th annual Halloween Trick or Treat with local businesses event, which took place from 2 to 5 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 3. Throughout trick-or-treating hours Thursday afternoon, Lexington Center was crawling with costumed children, patient parents and afternoon traffic. Bouquets of black, white and orange balloons identified participating businesses where employees, often in costume, greeted and treated Lexington's little princesses, professionals, vampires, robots, inanimate objects and animals.  "I love it, I think it's great," said Tanya Buchanan, who trick-or-treated around the Center with sons Oliver, 2, and Murphy, 10 months. "It's an …

Calming After the Storm

Town operations start returning to normal Wednesday, Nov. 2, after Saturday's October storm.

It's Wednesday afternoon and about 1,000 Lexington households are still without power, but the town is slowly but surely returning to normal. School is back in session, businesses are up and running, roads are reopening and even the fire and dispatch center call volumes are returning to normal.  "Things are looking pretty good," Deputy Town Manager Linda Crew Vine said after an emergency planning meeting.  "Everything seems calmer this morning, but Monday and Tuesday, we were primarily dealing with the storm." According to Crew Vine, most of Lexington's streets have reopened, but there are still some trouble areas where crews will have to go back out and do some more work. There were no issues with school buses navigating the roads this …
