Senior tailback Ryan Sweeney rushed for 207 yards and with two touchdowns as Acton-Boxboro capitalized on six turnovers and cruised to a 28-0 shutout win over Lexington Friday night at Leary Field.
Kyle Sweeney simply made life miserable for the Lexington High football team. The senior running back overcame the wet, slippery conditions and rushed for 207 yards on 15 carries along with two touchdowns as Acton-Boxboro dominated throughout a 28-0 shutout win in Friday night’s non-league match-up at a rain soaked Leary Field. With the win, the Colonials improve to 2-1 overall while the Minutemen remain winless at 0-3. Even in victory, Colonials’ coach Bill Maver realizes that there’s still plenty of work that needs to be done. “We were a little sloppy out there, and we got away with some things that could’ve hurt us,’’ said Maver. “We missed some tackles and some assignments, but we made the big plays when we had to and (Sweeney) came …

Minutemen have their opportunities, but can't convert in the non-league matchup against the Patriots on Friday night.
Lexington High’s offense showed flashes of brilliance on a couple plays against the Concord-Carlisle Patriots. Unfortunately, most football games are won and lost on many more than that. The Minutemen – a MIAA Division 2 team playing one from the lower Div. 2A – couldn’t cap drives and suffered three costly turnovers. And they couldn’t make it seven straight wins over C-C, as home team won 40-14 on its Memorial Field. Lexington had won each meeting since 2005 in this matchup of towns that are forever linked (see, American Revolution). But, under a new coach with a new system, the Minutemen showed they are still getting their feet under themselves in the early part of this 2011 season. “There’s a huge learning curve for the kids (and) there…

The Minutemen look to improve on their 2010 campaign with a new coach, new schemes and new attitude.
In its first season under new head coach George Peterson, the Lexington High School football team is set up to look like the Fightin’ Irish and play like Ducks – in a good way. When the Minutemen host Wakefield a week from tomorrow, they’ll be sporting sleek blue-and-gold Nike uniforms and unveiling new offensive and defensive schemes influenced by Oregon Ducks coach Chip Kelly, whom Peterson played under at the University of New Hampshire. Peterson, who replaced the legendary Bill Tighe, has brought to LHS a hardcore commitment to toughness, physicality, conditioning and a team motto of “Win the Day,” which the new coach borrowed from his old coach. “I always liked it,” Peterson said of coaching credo Kelly made popular at Oregon. “You …
