State Fines Utilities Millions for 2011 Storm Responses

NStar was fined $4 million in responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm, but already announced it plans to appeal.

The state on Tuesday ordered a total of $24.8 million in penalties to utility companies for their response to storms in 2011. Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan joined Department of Public Utilities (DPU) Chairman Ann Berwick and DPU commissioners today to announce the findings of the DPU’s investigation into responses to Tropical Storm Irene and the October 2011 snowstorm. Provided the penalties hold up, customers should see a reduction in their bill, though it is unclear how much, officials said.  National Grid faces the steepest penalty, at $18.725 million; NSTAR has been ordered to pay $4.075 million; and Western Massachusetts Electric Company to pay $2 million. Recognizing that outages are …

Lexington's 300th: Rolling the Musket Ball Back 'Til Next Spring

The following information was provided by the Lexington 300th Committee.

The 300 Anniversary Celebration Committee announces that the Musket Ball, scheduled for Nov. 17, is being rescheduled to next spring. It recently became apparent that the ticket sale goal would not be reached in time and feedback from the public has indicated that numerous residents who would like to attend are unable to for two primary reasons: The proximity of the date to Thanksgiving and the recent disruption to the lives of friends and families due to the hurricane last week. A number of people have expressed the desire to be with those in affected areas or to donate discretionary income to relief efforts at this time. All are in agreement they would like to celebrate at this event, but at a more convenient and appropriate time.  The…

Employees help out — and you can, too.

The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy-ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? TELL US: How Has NSTAR's Sandy Response Compared to Irene?

The number of power outages dropped significantly, but many residents were still in the dark for several hours.

As of Thursday evening, about 400 Lexington NSTAR customers were without power, according to NSTAR's outage map. This number represented about 3 percent of the total NSTAR customers in the town. While power may not have been an issue for some, at least 20 percent of local residents spent at least some of the storm in the dark.  During the height of Hurricane Sandy, well over 2,000 NSTAR customers were without power, or more than 15 percent of the town's total power customers. The utility company has been chipping away at the power restorations over the last few days. Although, interestingly, there were more without power for most of Tuesday than during the height of the storm on Monday. According to the NSTAR website, power restoration in …

PHOTOS: Trick-or-Treaters Take Lexington

Hurricane Sandy didn't stop hordes of ninjas, princesses, story book characters and Avengers from storming Lexington Center and surrounding neighborhoods for Halloween trick-or-treating.

The severe weather Hurricane Sandy brought earlier this week was plenty scary, but it didn't stop trick-or-treaters from hitting this streets this Halloween. During the afternoon of Oct. 31, hordes of ninjas, princesses, story book characters and Avengers stormed Lexington Center and business areas on Bedford Street, East Lexington and Five Forks for the Lexington Retailer's Association's 12th annual Halloween Trick or Treat with Local Businesses. Consensus among the parents in tow during the afternoon event was that the LRA trick-or-treat would be in advance of evening trick-or-treating, rather than instead of it. And among those who said it would replace any evening trick-or-treating, several of them said skipping the nighttime activity …
