Public Safety the Focus of LWV's Next First Friday Forum

Lexington's Police Chief, Fire Chief and Director of Human Services will be panelists at the League of Women Voters forum, to be held this Friday, Jan. 4, at Cary Library.

The following information was provided on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Lexington. The League of Women Voters of Lexington's First Friday Forum to be held this Friday, Jan. 4, will focus on Lexington's Public Safety Network and how our community handles different types of safety issues including crisis intervention. Police Chief Mark Corr, Fire Chief John Wilson and Human Services Director Charlotte Rogers will present some case studies that show the departments working together to serve citizens of all ages who may experience difficult and/or unsafe situations. LWV Forum to Take On 'The Voting Wars of 2012'

The Oct. 30 forum will feature Prof. Charles Stewart, from MIT's Department of Political Science.

UPDATED: 11 a.m., Oct. 30 -- This event WILL be held as scheduled, despite the many cancellations around town due to damage and outages caused by Hurricane Sandy. The following information was provided on behalf of the League of Women Voters of Lexington. Since the election of 2010, a number of states have passed laws that have imposed new voter ID requirements and restricted access to the polls. These laws reverse a trend, begun with the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to make voting more accessible to all Americans. Opponents of these laws worry that they will have a disproportionate effect on the ability of racial minority voters, as well as the less affluent and students, to vote in 2012. A House Too Full at Third Middlesex District Candidates Forum

Public safety officials and organizers had to thin the crowd considerably before the seven candidates for state senate in the Third Middlesex District could weigh in on the issues during an Aug. 15 candidates forum in Concord.

It’s probably been a little while now since the turnout for a candidates’ forum in the Third Middlesex District was a part of the story, but that changed this year. After the announcement in February that state Sen. Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln, would not seek a ninth term, a handful of new Democratic candidates emerged to join those who had already announced their intentions to run. Concord Democrats Joe Kearns Goodwin and Mara Dolan, along with Alex Buck of Chelmsford and Joe Mullin from Weston, threw their hats in the race, joining Republicans Greg Howes of Concord and Sandi Martinez of Chelmsford, and Mike Barrett, a Lexington Democrat, all of whom had declared candidicay before Fargo revealed her retirement plans. All Seven Third Middlesex Candidates Expected at LWV Forum

The Concord-Carlisle League of Women Voters is holding a candidates' night for candidates running for the 3rd Middlesex State Senate seat.

  This Wednesday night, the League of Women Voters of Concord and Carlisle will host a candidates' night for seven state senate hopefuls seeking the 3rd Middlesex seat that state Sen. Susan Fargo, D-Lincoln is vacating after eight terms. The event will be held 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center at 1276 Main St., Concord. The event is free and open to the public. The Democratic candidates are Mike Barrett, Alex Buck, Mara Dolan, Joe Kearns Goodwin and Joe Mullin. Republicans Gregory Howes and Sandi Martinez also plan to attend.  Howes and Martinez will sit on the first panel of the evening, while the five Democrats will make up the second panel, according to the format explained by the LWV. Candidates Night Coming For State Senate Hopefuls

The Concord-Carlisle League of Women Voters plans to hold a candidates' night for those running for the 3rd Middlesex State Senate seat.

The Concord-Carlisle League of Women Voters plans to hold a candidates' night for all the candidates running for the 3rd Middlesex state senate seat, the group announced in a press release.  The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center at 1276 Main St., Concord. It is free and open to the public. The Democratic candidates are Mike Barrett, Alex Buck, Mara Dolan, Joe Kearns Goodwin and Joe Mullin. Republicans Gregory Howes and Sandi Martinez also plan to attend.  Dolan, Kearns Goodwin and Howes are all from Concord.  Nancy Carapezza, the former president of the LWV, will moderate, according to the press release. Voters wanting to ask questions can email them to VoterService@lwvcc.org by Aug. 15.
