Lexington Business Shows Its Bruins Pride

Black and gold blooms at Wilson Farm.

There's no shortage of Bruins Pride on display at Wilson Farm in Lexington as the B's take on the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Finals.  From the colorful to the confectionary to the clever, the local business is supporting the local team in many forms.  Such as with the black-and-gold cakes with rice paper Bruins logos, and the sugar cookies and cupcakes decorated to match the home team. Not to mention the signs and banners hung throughout the farm stand. Chocolate mousse cakes with Bruins logos and assorted 6-inch cakes will be available as well, courtesy of bakery Chef Jeff Kneeland and the cake decorating team.  And then there's the raffle. According to Wilson's promotions team, the farm store will be raffling off a sheet cake …

Digital Federal Credit Union hopes to open 3,100 square feet of branch space this fall.

DCU hopes to open its 20th branch in Lexington Center sometime in early- to mid-November, according to a company spokesman. The largest credit union in New England has signed a lease for the space at 1751 Mass Ave, the former home of 344, and hopes to build out the space as 3,100 square feet of financial services over the next few months, according to John LaHair, public relations manager for DCU. What was once the site of a young women's clothing store will be filled with six offices, several teller pods and an Internet café, LaHair said told Patch. “We’re really looking forward to making our mark,” said LaHair. “When we go into a community, it’s not only a banking relationship that we establish. Ugh!!Where is the economic development team for Lexington on this? They have to know that another bank is a killer for the town vibrancy. Why not a Mexican restaurant or a New England Soup Factory? Is the parking problem so bad that we can only get a bank? Pathetic that such a prime location will increase the deadening our center, in spite of good strides with Fruitee Yoghurt, Running Store, etc…   more ›

Another Bank in Lexington Center?

Looks like it.

It's not exactly writing on the wall, but the signs on the window say DCU could be coming to Lexington Center. Signs saying DCU is "Coming Soon" have recently appeared in the windows at 1751 Mass Ave., the former home of 344, a young women's clothing store that closed earlier this year. DCU stands for Digital Federal Credit Union. According to the company website, DCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative headquartered in Marlborough. Chartered in October 1979, DCU presently serves more than 340,000 members in all 50 states. As of June 2, DCU's website did not list Lexington among its Massachusetts branch locations. But stay tuned to Patch -- we'll post more information about DCU's plans for the Lexington Center location is it becomes …

End of the Skein: Wild & Woolly to Close Lexington Store

A yarn about yarn, the closing of a store and the opening of new doors.

You can learn a lot about someone by their yarn. For Jacqueline Katzenstein, an English major at heart and retailer by trade, that’s as true with people’s stories as it is their textiles. Known to most as the owner the local yarn shop Wild & Woolly, Katzenstein has been a Lexington Center staple for decades. And, over the past 34 years, she’s gotten to know a lot of folks by their words and deeds. But the time as come to close Wild & Woolly Studio, for Katzenstein to walk away from the only real job she’s ever had and to find her next adventure. “It’s probably the right time,” Katzenstein said last week as loyal employees and customers helped prep the Meriam Street store for the sale to end all. “What I will miss is the whole people …

What’s the Stronger Statement, Survey or Word Cloud?

The survey says shopping and dining are the biggest draws to Lexington Center, but the word cloud’s loudest phrase was ‘many banks.’

About 700 respondents completed a 23-question survey administered this spring by Bentley University students working with the Lexington Center Committee. The survey, according to an LCC press release, was designed to prove the “likes and dislikes of suburban downtowns in general and Lexington’s downtown specifically.” Respondents were also asked what words best described the center, and those responses were used to produce a word cloud via the Wordle TM word cloud generator. Taken together, the two exercises reflect challenges the town and Lexington Center Committee wrestle with as they work to keep the downtown vibrant and viable. That is, retail and restaurants ranked as both top draws to the center and top areas for desired …

Survey Says: Lexington Center’s a Shopping and Dining Destination

But improved parking and more independent/specialty stores are desired.

As part of the Lexington Center Committee’s ongoing effort to figure out how to keep the town center vibrant and viable, the committee engaged a group of Bentley University undergrads to study the downtown central business district. Part of the students’ study was a 23-question survey made available to Lexington residents and others who visit the center, asking about their likes and dislikes about suburban downtowns in general and Lexington’s specifically.  About 700 respondents completed the survey, about 89 percent were Lexington residents and 77 percent were women, according to the LCC. “The survey validated some things,” said Jerry Michelson, chairman of the Center Committee. “Some of the information is things we’ve heard anecdotally…
