Middlesex County Second Healthiest in Mass., Says Robert Wood Johnson Foundation

Among Massachusetts' 14 counties, only Dukes County was healthier according to the study.

  Is Middlesex County the healthiest place in Massachusetts to live? If not, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation says it's right up there. In a recent study done by the Foundation, the "County Health Rankings and Roadmaps," Middlesex ended up second in the state, trailing only Dukes County overall. Even there, Middlesex County exceeded Dukes in some areas such as patient to doctor and patient to dentist ratios. In measures ranging from adult obesity and insurance coverage to premature death and teen birth rates, Middlesex County was at or exceeding the state average. Sequestration Budget Cuts Data: Which MA Counties Have the Most Federal Employees?

Middlesex County has more than 9,000 federal employees, most of whom work in defense.

The numbers here show the federal employees in Massachusetts by county in 2012, according to the latest figures from Eye on Washington, a DC-based lobbying firm that tracks federal employment. It compiles the data from the Office of Personnel Management, Federal Employment Statistics and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. While much has been made written on how the current sequestration battle in Washington could affect the national economy, these numbers are meant to give readers a sense of the sequestration at the local level. Middlesex County Sobriety Checkpoints Scheduled for Thanksgiving Weekend

Massachusetts State Police announce when drunk driver checkpoints will be set up in Middlesex County.

Massachusetts State Police will set up sobriety checkpoints somewhere in Middlesex County over Thanksgiving weekend, from Friday, Nov. 23 into Saturday. Nov. 24. The state police say the purpose for the checkpoints "is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways.  It will be operated during varied hours, the selection of vehicles will not be arbitrary, safety will be assured, and any inconveniences to motorists will be minimized with advance notice to reduce fear and anxiety."

Another Sobriety Checkpoint This Weekend

State police will set up a routine sobriety checkpoint for drivers somewhere in Middlesex County this weekend.

If you spot a state trooper camped out by the side of the road somewhere in Middlesex County this weekend, he or she may be doing more than just watching for speedsters. State Police Superintendent Col. Marian McGovern announced earlier this week that a sobriety checkpoint will be established on an undisclosed public way in Middlesex County from Saturday into Sunday. These checkpoints, which are funded by a state grant, are routine operations performed by the state police. McGovern said in a press release, "The purpose is to further educate the motoring public and strengthen the public’s awareness to the need of detecting and removing those motorists who operate under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs from our roadways." Sergeant in Sheriff's Office Arraigned on Drug Charges

An investigation begun in April culminated with yesterday's arrest.

A Somerville man arrested and charged with trafficking cocaine while working for the Middlesex County Sheriff's Department was arraigned in Woburn District Court this morning. The Middlesex District Attorney's office reported that the defendant, Michael Dell’Isola, 51, was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail with the condition that he stays away from the Sheriff’s Department by Judge Paul Yee. His next court date is June 8 for a probable cause hearing. According to Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone, Dell’Isola was charged with receiving cocaine from an undercover state trooper during an investigation. “This defendant is alleged to have accepted illegal narcotics and money from an undercover state trooper this afternoon, in violation of …
