Normally presented Patriots’ Day morning, Lexington’s three annual awards for outstanding citizens were handed out prior to Wednesday night’s session of annual Town Meeting.
This year’s awards ceremony was different, to be sure, but watching Robert Sacco react to receiving his White Tricorne, it would have been hard to imagine it happening any other way. Sitting in the back of the Cary Memorial Building’s newly designated Battin Hall, Sacco started putting the pieces together as Lions Club President Stacy Sheehan began describing this year’s recipient of the White Tricorne Hat award. His name called, Sacco rose and began walking toward the front of the hall, shaking hands and laughing – at himself, perhaps, if self-deprecation is possible in such a situation. Due to the Patriots’ Day schedule shakeup, the Lexington’s Outstanding Youth, Minuteman Cane and White Tricorne Hat awards will all be announced at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, April 10.
Three annual awards, given out in recognition of Lexington residents who go above and beyond, are typically presented during Patriots’ Day morning ceremonies on the Battle Green. The recipients are later honored participants in the afternoon parade that follows. However, this year it’s going to be a little different. As a nod to the nine-month celebration of Lexington’s 300th anniversary, the afternoon parade has been pushed up from Monday to Sunday, which means the afternoon parade will actually be held before the morning ceremonies. And so, the White Tricorne Hat, Minuteman Cane and Outstanding Youth awards will all be presented at 7 p.m. this Wednesday, at Cary Hall.
