Minuteman Officials Urge Legislators for Support

Minuteman officials, and those from the state, spoke on the importance of career and technical education Friday morning, as they hope to move forward with reconstruction plans.

Local and state officials discussed the importance of career and technical education in today’s workforce development and how this relates to Minuteman Career and Technical High School’s reconstruction plans at a Legislators Breakfast last Friday morning at the school. Minuteman, and schools like it throughout the state, provide workforce-ready workers, according to Rebekah Lashman, senior vice president of Commonwealth Corp., a “quasi-public” corporation that focuses on workforce development in the state. “Minuteman is a shining example of what our resources can do to help meet our workforce development needs," Lashman said at the breakfast, which was attended by about 30 people, including local legislators, school committee members from …

Exciting Start to School Year at Minuteman

Officials at Minuteman Career and Technical High School said the 2011-2012 school year brings many new students, exciting new partnerships and progress on a regional agreement.

Minuteman Career and Technical High School opened its 2011-2012 school year yesterday, Aug. 30, welcoming the largest group of incoming freshmen and other new students in about two decades. While the rush of new students is one of the exciting aspects of this new year at Minuteman, it also creates what Superintendent of Schools Edward Bouquillon described as a “crunch year,” in which the school will have a high number of students and low staffing levels. The influx of new students—204 incoming freshmen, 18 sophomores and 11 juniors—means the school will have “some large class sizes,” but officials said they are excited about increased interest across the programs available at the regional vocational school in Lexington. According to …

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Back to School?

Share your opinion in the comments section below.

As summer winds down, parents, children, educators and many others are counting down the days until the start of the 2011-2012 school year. Teachers in the Lexington Public Schools officially start next Monday, Aug. 29, although new teachers attended orientation today. Students start going back next Tuesday, with grades K-12 all attending on Wednesday, Aug. 31. At Minuteman Career and Technical High School, new student orientation will be held Monday, Aug. 29, with all students returning the following day. And the number of college kids home for summer break -- or who headed home for the final few weeks after wrapping up internships -- is decreasing by the day.  Raising Lexington columnist Audra Myerberg offers some great advice for easing…

Lexington Police Announce New Tipline

Residents can now text message or email police with tips about school-related activity.

The Lexington Police Department last week announced the development of a new tip line intended to give residents direct, real-time access to the School Rescource Officer. To use the new line, residents can send a text message or email to safeschools@lexingtonma.gov, reporting unsafe or illegal activities on Lexington school campuses or involving local youths in the community. It can also be used as a way for folks to ask questions or advice of the School Resource Officer. Det. Jim Rettman, the school resource officer assigned to Lexington High School, the middle schools and Minuteman Career and Technical High School, believes the tip line will open up better lines of communication with the community. "One of the biggest hitches we run into…

Making a Splash In the Fight Against Cancer

LHS students are organizing a May 15 "Swim for Life" to benefit Dana-Farber.

It’s often said that enthusiastic volunteers “dive in” to cause they are passionate about. A pair of Lexington teens are taking the phrase literally. Lily Hochman and Lauren Jackson, co-founders of Lexington Youth Against Cancer, are recruiting swimmers and volunteers for “Swim for Life” fundraiser to benefit the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Asking people to swim for cancer research, rather than, say, running or walking, may sound a bit strange, but Hochman said there’s a simple explanation for their aquatic event. “We decided to have a swim because teenagers are very social beings,” said Hochman, a 16-year-old junior at Lexington High School. “With a walk or a run, you really only get to talk and socialize with the people in your group, …
