Who Had the Better Rachel Dratch Joke, Al Franken or Ed Markey?

Senator vs. Congressman -- Who ya got?

Politics and Saturday Night Live go together like battleships and bayonets. And this time of year, it seems these strange yet familiar bedfellows cannot escape one another. That much was true last week in Lexington. In town while campaigning for Elizabeth Warren, U.S. Rep Ed Markey, D-MA, and U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-WI, traded one-liners about Rachel Dratch, the Lexington native who, like Franken, is an SNL alum. For those unfamiliar with Dratch, here's the 1984 Lexington High grad doing the Blue and Gold varsity jacket proud as the Zazu to Jimmy Fallon's "Sully" in an old Boston Teens skit. Markey's joke riffed on Lexington's label as "The Birthplace of American Liberty," while Franken went with a reference to Michelle Bachmann's …

VIDEO: Girl Walks Into Lexington High School

Rachel Dratch comes home to chat about her new book, Girl Walks Into a Bar ... Comedy Calamities, Dating Disasters, and a Midlife Miracle (Penguin Books).

Rachel Dratch walked back into Lexington High School Sunday afternoon, only this time she wasn’t a student in the audience. No, she came at the invitation of Lexington Community Education to read from her recently-published book and talk about her life in Lexington, Chicago and New York. Before she took center stage she stood outside the Donald Gillespie Auditorium schmoozed with the crowd and took pictures with her mom, Elaine. It was the first time she has been inside the school since her 1984 graduation, the actor, comedienne and author said and laughed.     Dratch, known for her seven-year gig on Saturday Night Live and for her recently published book, Girl Goes into a Bar … , read a few pages from different chapters.   “I never liked …

Lexington Native Rachel Dratch Signs Books at BJ's

The former SNL cast member signed copies of her new book at BJ's in Northborough.

"I went home and immediately peed on a stick. I'd never done this before, never even had a scare. I wasn't even the least bit nervous about the outcome. Three minutes later, I went back to check the results. With no ceremony, no heart racing, no slooow lifting of the stick, ready to check off  my list as a possibility. Two lines... pregna_...WHAT? And then, my heart did start racing. I began to pace around the apartment and speak aloud to myself, 'Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!'" Best known for characters such as "Debbie Downer" on Saturday Night Live, Rachel Dratch said after her run on SNL, which ended in 2006, the parts didn't come in as much. She had never written a book before, but a mix of the dating scene—and getting pregnant—in her mid 40s…

Did You Catch Lexington Native Rachel Dratch on SNL?

Sully and Denise returned to SNL on Saturday, Dec. 17 as Lexington native Rachel Dratch joined guest host Jimmy Fallon for the cold open.

With Jimmy Fallon guest hosting, it was a given that Saturday Night Live would open with a few familiar faces. And one of them may have been even more familiar in these parts as Lexington-native Rachel Bratch joined Fallon in bringing the "Boston Teens" back to SNL. The familiar characters Denise "Zazou" McDonough and Pat "Sully" Sullivan were back at their old stomping grounds, trying to sneak into "the Shawsheen VoTech Winter Formal" to recreate their second date. According to HuffPo Comedy: The couple, now married with kids, have changed in few other ways: they're still loud and love Nomar, their friend Tommy still makes videos of them, they're still wild about each other, and they still make out like buried treasure lies at the back of…

I rarely scream with delight, but I was just losing it when the sketch started the show. It was fabulous to see the townies (and let's not forget Amy Poehler, another local fave) on the show with REAL Boston-area accents!   more ›
