About Town

About Town: Sandwiches and Stops

Ready for a great sandwich -- and school buses.

We’ve all been reading about Ben Kochman’s best-sandwich mission. It culminated in yesterday’s video where he chose the “Lexington” at Tutto Italiano. That was pretty fitting -- and looked absolutely delicious. Thank you Ben! While we may or may not agree, I certainly bow to his taste buds and will try that sandwich soon. I also want the one from Via Lago -- with the prosciutto. Not every Lexington lunch spot met the criteria for Ben's so-called sandwich crawl, which means plenty of delicious sammies were left off of the list. So, if you're still sandwich shopping try Nourish for the falafel wrap. Neillio's Gourmet Kitchen is known for its Turkey Terrific -- it's thanksgiving on a bulkie roll or any type of bread. Alexander's, a Lexington …

A couple of things-- First, after nearly two weeks at camp, I just couldn't continue reading all the sandwich suggestions. Camp food is fine, but a sandwich and a Coke would taste really good right now ... :-) Second, there are plans in the works concerning a combination school bus and Lexpress pass. If an article has not already been done on what is going on, I am sure one will surface shortly…   more ›

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Which 'Wich?

Share your opinion in the comment section below.

This morning completed our sandwich crawl of Lexington Center, in which intern Ben Kochman stopped by four popular spots and ordered the top-selling 'wich on the menu.  Ben used his camera to capture the creation of each sandwich and then consumed/critiqued each before selecting his pick for the best in Lexington Center. His verdict placed Tutto's "Lexington" atop the list, followed by a monster triple-decker from Avenue Deli and a half-pressed tomato, basil, mozzarella and prosciutto sandwich from Via Lago, which tied for second place. Great Harvest's summery "Turkado" was Ben's least favorite among the Center's most popular sandwiches. With that being said, many loyal Lexington Patch readers know About Town columnist Denise Dube favors …

VIDEO Lexington Center Sandwich Tour: The Verdict

What's the best sandwich in the Center? We have the answers; or at least one hungry intern's opinion.

On the eve of national bakery-cafe titan Panera Bread's arrival in the Center, we went on a sandwich crawl of Lexington, searching for the finest deli sandwich in town. Stop one on our sandwich tour was Tutto Italiano, an italian speciality shop on Waltham Street that moved into town in 2006. Stop two was tough-guy sandwich shop Avenue Deli on Mass. Ave, where we learned how to construct a proper New York Club. Next we stopped by Via Lago, a 23-year-old Lexington institution, where we tried the mozzarella, tomato, basil sandwich.  Our final stop was Great Harvest Bread Co., a national chain that could end up being Panera's biggest competitor. Now, with exhausted gums and a full stomach, we present: The Verdict.  Best sandwich in the Center…

Lexington Center Sandwich Tour: Avenue Deli

We try the massive "New York Deli Double Decker," at this Mass. Ave. deli.

On the eve of national bakery-cafe titan Panera Bread's arrival in the Center, we're going on a sandwich crawl of Lexington, searching for the finest deli sandwich in town. Stop one on our sandwich tour was Tutto Italiano, an italian speciality shop on Waltham Street that moved into town in 2006. Next up is Avenue Deli, a relatively new independent deli on Mass. Ave. Where: Avenue Deli, 1806 Massachusetts Ave. The Sandwich: The "New York Deli Double Decker" What's in the 'wich: Layers of Boar's Head turkey, roast beef, and swiss cheese topped with coleslaw and russian dressing in between three slices of marble rye bread.
