#Lex300: Sharing the Social Scuttlebutt from Incorporation Weekend

What people are saying on Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites about the LexCelebrate! Incorporation Weekend to celebrate Lexington's 300th.

The devoted volunteers driving Lexington's 300th anniversary celebration have suggested using the hashtag #Lex300 when sharing photos, videos and other content from the celebration via social media. And at least a few of us have taken that lead. To that end, Lexington Patch is using Storify to aggregate tweets, Facebook posts and other social media shares about the LexCelebrate! Incorporation Weekend festivities. We'll update the Storify every few hours to include the latest live-tweeting, Facebook posting, photos and citizen journalism surrounding Incorporation Weekend. Here's how you can be included in our coverage: Tweet and Instagram using the hashtag #Lex300 or include #Lex300, Lexington's 300th or some simliar verbiage in your …

Notes from Youville

Notes from Youville: How Seniors Benefit from Social Media

On Keeping in touch, and how seniors can benefit from the use of social media.

Last year, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was chatting with a group of seniors in the conference room at the Selfhelp Benjamin Rosenthal Senior Center in Queens. Well, strictly speaking, not everybody involved was “in” the conference room.  A few participants, peering in from a large screen, were able to join the conversation from their bedrooms and watch from their own computers as the mayor spoke.  “We all think that technology is just for the young people,” said Bloomberg at the time. “That’s not true. Seniors have a need and they look for ways to solve their problems, and technology in many cases is the answer.”   For those watching from their personal computers, the statement rang true. They were participating in the conversation …

Socializing in Lexington Gets Even Easier

Lexington's "CommonPlace" launches today.

People today probably have more ways to socialize than ever before, and Lexingtonians can add another network to their lists. Yes, the social media pool deepens today with the launch of OurCommonPlace in Lexington. An online platform for local community engagement, CommonPlace aims to help neighbors and community leaders to share information with neighbors, according to the website’s description.  If that sounds similar to your discussion groups, listservs, Help Around Towns, Neighbor Brigades and Patch sites, that’s because CommonPlace is definitely tapping into that same vein of civic-minded, hyper-local cyberactivists. In fact, Lexington's active online community was a part of the attraction. “OurCommonPlace is a national civic …

Social Romney: Mitt, Ann, the Boys and New Media

The first part in Patch's The Romney Effect series looks at how Mitt Romney and his family appear on social media.

Mitt Romney's Facebook page states he likes "East of Eden," "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" and Johnny Cash. But you won't find anything about his hometown of Belmont on his 'likes' list. Does that mean Romney doesn't like Belmont, despite living there for four decades? We can't presume to know, but we know that comments or insights, likes (or even dislikes) about local happenings doesn't appear to be part of the presumptive Republican candidate's social media presence. More than 2.5 million Facebook members 'like' Belmont's most prominent citizen. Or about 10 percent of the 'likes' on Pres. Barack Obama's Facebook page. Social media – Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare, Flickr, Instagram and even newcomer Pinterest – have been considered …

Question of the Day

Question of the Day: Embracing New Media?

Share your opinion in the comments.

The Lexington Historical Society this week took an old-school approach to new media, creating a Twitter account that will tweet out daily entries from the diary of the Rev. Jonas Clarke.  Their creation of the handle @JonasClarke is the latest sign that social media is not some silly circus, but rather an evolving avenue for any number of organizations and individuals to connect with friends, family, followers and the general public. Local businesses, like Ranc's and Ride Studio Cafe, use Twitter and Facebook to promote flavors of the day and events. And the Recreation Department uses Facebook to let friends know about things like hours of operation and Summer Fun Fests.  And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Any number of individuals …

A 140-Character Blast From the Past

Lexington's patriot-pastor, the Rev. Jonas Clarke, has joined the social media revolution.

Twitter is no longer an exclusive club reserved for news junkies, know-it-alls and shameless self-promoters. The still exploding social media site is now home to historical figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Albert Einstein and John Quincy Adams. And, now, thanks to the Lexington Historical Society, it’s time to add Lexington’s own patriot-minister, the Rev. Jonas Clarke, to that list. Yes, the good reverend entered the social media circus this Monday, Aug. 15, when @JonasClarke tweeted “Hot, very dry. 15aug1774.” According to Rev. Jonas Clarke’s twitter bio, @JonasClarke will post “The line-a-day diary entries of Rev. Jonas Clarke, A.M., minister at Christ Church in Lexington, 1755-1805.” Sam Doran, who is posting the daily tweets, said he …
