Sports Week in Review, July 23 - July 29

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

This week, the Lexington Post 38 American Legion baseball team continued play in the Chairman’s Cup, a postseason tournament for teams in District 5 that did not make the playoffs. Last Friday, Lexington faced Concord Post 158 in a losers’ bracket elimination game. Post 38 kept its season alive in a big way, exploding for 17 hits and 16 runs in beating the visitors by 15. Chris Shaw had a big day with five RBIs and a grand slam in the first inning. On Sunday, the next edition of the annual Volley for Molly charity event was announced. The Lexington High School volleyball team will hold the fundraiser during the match at Ralph Lord Gymnasium on Sept. 30. The Minutemen have held the event each year since 2009, when former teammate Molly …

Senior Softball League is Family-Driven

30-plus years and they're still swinging.

In the Lexington Senior Softball, league leader A-team Roundabout Diner & Lounge (11-0-1) clinched first place and a playoff spot Thursday night with a 22-6, six-inning mercy-rule-threatened win over seventh-placed Stone Meadow (1-10) in the second-to-last week of the regular season. But winning isn’t everything. Rob MuCulloch -- the coach, player and assistant commissioner of the league, among other things -- talked about the league, explaining that it’s more than 20 years-old, that participants have been playing with each other since high school and that hot dogs and hamburgers are grilled in the school parking lots after wins and losses. “I’ve had a team since 1981,” MuCulloch said. “I didn’t bring a team into Concord until 1986. I had …

Sports Week in Review, June 25 to July 1

A recap look at the games and stories Patch covered in and around Lexington this week.

This week, Patch headed out to the diamond with members of the Lexington Senior Softball League. Many of the teams have been playing in the summer league for a number of years. Some participants have been playing sports alongside each other since nursery school and continue to do so today, thanks to the softball league. Games are held at various fields around town each Tuesday and Thursday night. Each nigh features a doubleheader, with first pitches generally scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. On Thursday, we caught up with the members of the Prime Time squad, as they picked up a nice victory over the boys of Foul Play. But more so than winning, the games are a chance for old and new friends to meet up and enjoy the warm months.

Lexington's Boys of Summer

Senior Softball Players are still growing up together after 40 years.

Two teammates on Prime Time, a Lexington Senior Softball League team, have been buddies since nursery school. They went to Hancock and Hastings, Adams, Clarke and Diamond, and played ball for Lexington in 1985. They’ve grown up on these streets, lived on Forest just a walk away from the high school, and now, their young children sit in the stands, watching their daddies run in the dirt in late June. “Don’t you remember this?” one of the guys asked, leaning on the back of his SUV, reminiscing as the two began talking about particular girl teammates from their little league team, the Phoenix, in its first year when the league was co-ed in Lexington. The sounds were droning out, and it was if the two grown men, both in their early 40s, were …

Lexington Spring 2011 Season in Review

A look back at how the LHS athletic teams fared during the spring season.

Students at Lexington High School are patiently counting down until the end of the school year, which looms just a few short days away. But for Minutemen athletes, the year is already over as many LHS teams wrapped up the spring season during the past few weeks. It was yet another successful season for teams wearing blue and gold, with a number of Minutemen squads closing out their year in various MIAA sectional tournaments. While none of Lexington’s teams earned the right to hoist a sectional title trophy and a spot in the state tourney, many still turned in stellar years that will be used as building blocks for future success. Here we will recap how the Minutemen fared with the Patch Spring 2011 Season in Review by taking a look back at …

Sports Week in Review, April 30 - May 6

Lexington High softball, girls' tennis teams receive key performances from unexpected sources.

Coach Frank Pagliuca readily admits this has been an up-and-down season where consistency has been elusive for his Lexington High School softball squad. On Wednesday, the Minutemen were certainly up. They scored five runs in the first inning and added six in the third inning en route to a 12-0, mercy-rule-shortened five inning win over Watertown High School. Freshman pitcher Maddie Orcutt, making her first varsity start, was dazzling in the circle. On Friday, the girls’ tennis team also received a stellar performance from an unexpected source. Senior Alison Marqusee, usually a JV player, was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in her career and she delivered. She and Caroline DiNapoli won a tight match in the No. 2 doubles…

LHS Softball Starts Fast, Finishes Off Watertown Early

Minutemen win 5-inning, mercy-rule-shortened Middlesex League contest.

There was no shortage of activity at Lexington High School on Tuesday afternoon. Between the baseball game, the track and field meet and the softball game – all against Watertown High School – the fields off Worthen Road were abuzz. But perhaps no action could meet that of the softball contest between the Minutemen and Raiders. Lexington started fast and finished off Watertown early, earning a 12-0 mercy-rule shortened victory in five innings. The Minutemen jumped on top from the start by scoring five runs in the first inning. They added six more in the third, and polished off the Middlesex League victory with one in the fifth when the umpires called it. “This league’s a tough league, you never know what you’re going to get,” Lexington …
