LHS Fights Way into Div. 1 North Boys Hoops Finals

The No. 11 Minutemen held on for a 51-50 win over the second-seeded Acton-Boxboro to earn a spot in tomorrow night's finals against Charlestown.

The improbable run continues for the Lexington High boys basketball team. Last night in Lawrence, the No. 11 seeded Minutemen held on for a 51-50 win over No. 2 Acton-Boxboro to earn a spot in tomorrow night’s Division 1 North final at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. There they’ll face No. 5 Charlestown after the Townies topped No. 1 Central Catholic 54-47 last night in Reading. The Minutemen raced out to an early lead against A-B on Thursday night, taking a 27-16 advantage into halftime, but the Colonials cut it to a 35-33 deficit after the third quarter, according to the Lowell Sun. LHS senior Chris O’Keefe sunk what turned out to be the winning jumper with 19 seconds to go, and A-B couldn’t connect on two shots to win it the final 12 …

Blue Sox Head Back to ICL Championship Series

Lexington rallies for walk-off victory in deciding game of semifinal series against the Reading Bulldogs on Monday night.

Under their uniform tops, several Lexington players wear blue camouflaged T-shirts with the phrase “Blue Sox Baseball” imprinted on the front and “Hunted” inscribed on the back. Fitting, considering the target the organization carries as the four-time defending Intercity League champion. On Monday night, the Blue Sox absorbed the best shot the upstart Reading Bulldogs could muster in the deciding Game 5 of the ICL semifinals at Lexington High School. The home team rallied from down a run to walk off with a 4-3 victory and earn a shot to play for its eighth overall league title. Blue Sox third baseman Ross Curley dropped down a well-placed bunt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to score right fielder Dan Graham and …

'Best of the Best': Graham's Blast Swings Momentum Back in Blue Sox Favor

Right fielder Dan Graham hit a go-ahead, two-run shot to center field Friday night, as the Lexington Blue Sox pulled ahead, 2-1, in their best-of-five semifinal series.

The Lexington Blue Sox were in a tough spot Friday night, and then Dan Graham stepped to the plate. The top-seeded Blue Sox had already dropped the front end of their doubleheader against the Reading Bulldogs, 3-2, to fall even in their best-of-five semifinal series, and, with Graham at the plate, they trailed again in game three, 2-1, with two outs and a man on third in the bottom of the fifth inning. However, moments later Graham would stomp the plate and yell, “Let’s go!” at his awaiting teammates, as he crushed a ball on a 1-1 count to the electrical boxes past the center-field fence at Lexington High School for a go-ahead, two-run homer. “We’ve had a lot of tremendous players here, a lot of great players, but he is the greatest of the…

Karis Leads Blue Sox to Game One Win

Pitcher Matt Karis went the distance Wednesday, as the Lexington Blue Sox beat the Reading Bulldogs 4-1 in game one of the Intercity League semifinals.

The Lexington Blue Sox ironically got a “bulldog”-like performance from pitcher Matt Karis Wednesday night, as they defeated the Reading Bulldogs 4-1 at home to take game one of their best-of-five semifinal series. “You got to tip your cap to [Karis],” Blue Sox manager Rick DeAngelis said after the game. “He was a bulldog out there for us tonight.” With a first-round bye giving the top-seeded Blue Sox (25-6-1) a nine-day layoff before Wednesday’s game, Karis quickly shook off the rust striking out the first three batters he faced, all of them looking. In all, Karis would fan nine Bulldogs in his complete-game effort, while only giving up one unearned run. Karis, a hard-throwing right-hander from Southborough and then Gettysburg College, …

Blue Sox Tied in Game Two with Play Suspended

With the umpires postponing the extra innings of game two until tonight, the Blue Sox now find themselves with a season-altering doubleheader.

After seven innings of hard-fought baseball, the sun set on the Lexington Blue Sox and Reading Bulldogs Thursday night and play was suspended with game two of their best-of-five semifinal series tied 2-2. The postponement sets up a crucial and unconventional doubleheader in Lexington tonight, with the teams picking up right where they left off in game two, the start of extra innings, and then continuing on to play game three after. On Thursday, the top-seeded Blue Sox (25-6-1) dug out of a 2-0 hole to tie the game, at 2-2, in the top of the sixth inning. “I thought we had the momentum,” Blue Sox manager Rick DeAngelis said after the game was called at Reading High School, “but that’s baseball as they say.” Natural light won’t be an issue …

Finally, the Blue Sox Defeat the Andre Chiefs

Third time's the charm for Lexington, as it picked up 9-4 victory over the Chiefs after losing the first two games of the season series.

It took more than a month of Intercity League play before Lexington and the Andre Chiefs faced each other for the first time, and another 25 days for the Blue Sox to pick up their first win in the season series, a 9-4 victory at Lexington High School on Wednesday night. Andre had owned Lexington this year, winning the first two times the teams had met, including this past Sunday at Tufts University. In fact, both meetings occurred in the Chiefs’ hometown of Medford. But the Blue Sox (21-4-1) showed how difficult it is to keep a team as deep and talented as theirs down for very long. The third time was the charm for Lexington. “We talked about this (two-game) series being a preview of playoff baseball, and it was,” said Blue Sox manager …
