The company is holding discussions with labor representatives as the deadline for a three-year contract nears on Feb. 23.

Representatives of the Stop & Shop grocery store chain are looking to hire temporary replacement workers as it prepares for a potential labor strike, according to a report in the Boston Herald last Friday.  The Quincy-based company is currently holding contract discussions with United Food and Commercial Workers Union locals who represent more than 40,000 Stop & Shop employees in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island, according to the Herald. The three-year contract will expire on Saturday, Feb. 23.  Lexington's Stop & Shop is located in the shopping center at 36 Bedford Street.  While discussions continue, the company is running eight hiring sites from Mansfield to Quincy to Woburn. A Stop & Shop spokeswoman told the Herald that …

Burlington Market Basket has come a long way since the days you'd often see managers chatting away while standing in a pile of dirt in the old store. It is hard to justify shopping at Stop and Shop when items I commonly purchase are often 50 cents more expensive at S & S. Late hours are nice, but the seafood and meat counters are stored away and you have to deal with big pallets of shrink wrap …   more ›

LPD Arrests Winchester Man for Stealing Gift Cards from Stop & Shop

The alleged thief reportedly used a bad check on a bundle of gift cards.

Lexington Police last week arrested a Winchester man who allegedly walked away from Stop & Shop with $3,000 worth of gift cards after writing a check the market couldn’t cash. According to Lt. Det. Michael McLean, the supermarket's security recently approached police with information about a man using a bad check to steal $3,000 in unknown gift cards. Police were able to trace the old check back to Edward J. King, 38, of 80 Irving St., Winchester, and called him into the station for an interview, McLean said. During his conversation with Lexington investigators, King reportedly made a comment that led to his arrest for larceny by check. The alleged crime actually took place about a month ago, according to McLean, who said it’s common for …

About Town

About Town: Secret Brand Patrolers

Surprise shoppers this Sunday.

Need any bread, milk, coffee, eggs or maybe even a flu shot? How about gas credits? Reducing gas prices is the reason some of us choose Stop & Shop. Over the last few weeks, the pharmacy has been offering free flu shots, which is yet another draw, although admittedly, I haven’t taken them up on the offer yet. This latest Stop & Shop offering should get everyone to the Bedford Street store this Sunday, Sept. 18. Anne Moulin, Stop & Shop’s public relations official, who coincidentally comes from Lexington, sent a press release to Patch giving us Saturday’s information. Apparently secret “Brand Patrollers” will be going up and down aisles watching what we buy. If they see us choosing Stop & Shop brands, which includes: Nature’s Promise; …

Not to be negative, but if people really think about those gas incentives, they would probably be shopping at Market Basket. My car has a 10 gallon tank. Usually I fill it at 8 gallons, but let's use 10 gallons so the math is easier. For every $100.00 I spend at Stop & Shop, I get 10 cents off per gallon. Total savings for my $100.00 of groceries: a whopping $1.00. If I had a 20 gallon tank, …   more ›

About Town

About Town: Something Bruin in Bedford

Caution: Bruins Fever still rages nearby in Bedford.

Different stores have different specialties or ingredients. Lexington's Stop & Shop offers more of one thing and less of another. Same holds true at the Bedford location. My favorite tea is usually in the Bedford location, so I headed toward the Great Road store. I ran into fellow Lexingtonian Colleen Blauer and we chatted about the Joseph Estabrook Elementary School rebuild and about the Robinson Road entrance or exit. From there we headed toward the produce section, where I found a huge crowd. Was there a run on apples or asparagus -- and why didn't they hit the Lexington Farmers Market instead? There Boston Bruin Defenseman Andrew Ference was sitting at a table signing autographs, holding babies (yup) and shaking hands. The line was so …
