A look back at how the LHS athletic teams fared during the spring season.
Students at Lexington High School are patiently counting down until the end of the school year, which looms just a few short days away. But for Minutemen athletes, the year is already over as many LHS teams wrapped up the spring season during the past few weeks. It was yet another successful season for teams wearing blue and gold, with a number of Minutemen squads closing out their year in various MIAA sectional tournaments. While none of Lexington’s teams earned the right to hoist a sectional title trophy and a spot in the state tourney, many still turned in stellar years that will be used as building blocks for future success. Here we will recap how the Minutemen fared with the Patch Spring 2011 Season in Review by taking a look back at …

St. John's defeats Minutemen, 3-2, to capture first sectional championship since 2003.
Call it what you will, whether moral victory or a confidence boost heading into the offseason. Either way, Lexington High School boys tennis coach Chris Pugliese wanted his team to win the No. 1 doubles point against St. John’s Prep of Danvers. Even though the No. 2 Falcons had already locked up the MIAA North Division 1 championship, the No. 1 Minutemen still wanted that doubles point Friday afternoon at Newton South High School. So, with all other matches finished, LHS’ Dan Maffa and Preston Wu continued to battle St. John’s John Corvi and Bradley Noyes. Though it took three sets, the Minutemen came through with a hard-fought 7-6 (8-6), 2-6, 7-5. That brought the final score to 3-2 in favor of the Falcons. “We took first doubles today, …

Lexington High softball, girls' tennis teams receive key performances from unexpected sources.
Coach Frank Pagliuca readily admits this has been an up-and-down season where consistency has been elusive for his Lexington High School softball squad. On Wednesday, the Minutemen were certainly up. They scored five runs in the first inning and added six in the third inning en route to a 12-0, mercy-rule-shortened five inning win over Watertown High School. Freshman pitcher Maddie Orcutt, making her first varsity start, was dazzling in the circle. On Friday, the girls’ tennis team also received a stellar performance from an unexpected source. Senior Alison Marqusee, usually a JV player, was inserted into the starting lineup for the first time in her career and she delivered. She and Caroline DiNapoli won a tight match in the No. 2 doubles…
Minutemen blank Watertown 5-0.
The Lexington High School girls’ tennis team improved to 10-3 on the season after a 5-0 home sweep against Watertown High School (0-12) on Friday. “I’d like it to be 13-0,” ninth-year LHS coach Bob O’Neill said, laughing. Earlier in the season Lexington lost to Winchester 4-1, to non-league opponent Andover 3-2 and to Burlington 3-2, O’Neill said. In Friday’s match, the story of the day was Lexington senior Alison Marqusee. A junior varsity player, Marqusee was inserted into the Minutemen’s varsity lineup as part of the No. 2 doubles teams with Caroline DiNapoli. They faced and defeated Watertown’s Maddy Rimsa and Emma Day. “(Marqusee is) a junior varsity player, but we like to give everybody a chance to play a varsity match,” O’Neill said…

LHS boys lacrosse continues strong start, while boys' tennis is rained out and girls lax falls.
The Lexington High School boys’ lacrosse team continued its stellar season this week, while the boys’ tennis team dealt with some inclement weather and the girls’ lacrosse team couldn’t quite keep up with Concord-Carlisle. On Tuesday, LHS wasted little time in showing Watertown High School how to play the game of lacrosse. The Minutemen, a well established program and perennial contenders, jumped out front of the first-year varsity Raiders with three quick goals and never looked back. On Thursday, Patch tried to get out to see the boys' tennis team, but its matchup with Watertown was postponed due to some wet weather that swept through the area. A makeup date has not been announced. On Friday, the LHS girls’ lacrosse team took on …
