Ed Markey will maintain his seat in Congress.
Democrat U.S. Congressman Ed Markey will serve a 19th term in Washington. Markey led Republican challenger Tom Tierney 75 percent to 25 percent with 41 percent of precincts reporting, according to Boston.com, which had called the race by 9:45 p.m. Markey's seat has traditionally been for the 7th District of Massachusetts, but that changed with redistricting last year. Markey's new district is the 5th, and it added a sliver of Cambridge, previously represented by Michael Capuano, as well as the western towns of Southborough, Ashland, Holliston, Sherborn, and a large portion of Sudbury. Tom Tierney topped fellow Republicans Frank Addivinola and Jeff Semon Thursday.
Framingham's Tom Tierney is the Republican selection for the Massachusetts 5th district seat in Congress, the AP reports. Tierney, a 69-year-old actuary consultant, topped fellow Republicans Frank Addivinola of Malden and Jeff Semon of Lexington. He will face incumbent Ed Markey, who has served 18 straight terms in Washington, in the general election in November. According to the AP, Tierney received 42 percent of the vote, Addivinola placed second with 31 percent and Semon received 28 percent. A total of 11,539 ballots were cast in fifth district primary. Tierney previously ran for in Congress in 2010, losing in the Republican primary to Gerry Dembrowski in the primary. Dembroski went on to lose to Markey. An official from Tierney's camp …

Candidates say they are ready to take on Ed Markey.
A trio of Republicans in the new fifth district are vying for the opportunity to challenge Ed Markey for his long-held seat in congress. Voters heading to the polls for Thursday's primary in the new district will see three names on the ballot for the Republican nomination: Tom Tierney, Frank Addivinola and Lexington's Jeff Semon. Each of the three wants the chance to topple Ed Markey, a Democrat from Malden. It's a tall task -- Markey has been elected to 18 consecutive terms and has never won by less than 28 points. But his district has been re-aligned since his last election in 2010, and it has added Southborough, Ashland, Holliston, Sherborn, most of Sudbury and about half of Cambridge.
