Week in Review: April 1 to April 7

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

Annual Town Meeting and unfortunate business news made headlines this week in Lexington.  But things started out on a light note, with a neat photo gallery from a Sunday afternoon April Fool’s stunt that saw colonial militia men and an inflatable tank stand against Redcoat re-enactors in a Patriots’ Day practice run on the Battle Green. On Monday night, a special Town Meeting held within annual Town Meeting approved a funding for a new Estabrook Elementary School. Later that night, Town Meeting also approved the assessment for Minuteman High School. On Wednesday, annual Town Meeting approved a more than $150 million operating budget for fiscal 2013 and worked through the first three Community Preservation Act projects, but the bulk of …

Week in Review: March 25 to March 31

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

A busy week this one was. There was the start of annual Town Meeting, a brush fire, a few arrests and a court appearance by an accused killer. Monday, March 26 was the opening night of 2012’s annual Town Meeting, and during the second session on Wednesday members voted to approve zoning amendments to allow residential use and residential occupations in the Lexington Center Business District, but shot down a proposal to allow taller buildings and a greater floor area ratio. Amidst town government headlines on Tuesday morning, Raising Lexington columnist Audra Myerberg explained why her “momtourage” is one accessory she simply can’t do without. Later in the day, a large brush fire broke out in the conservation land between Justin Park and …

Week in Review: March 18 to March 24

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

Monday was the day many had been waiting for: The Board of Selectmen decided about a use for the Busa Farms property and moved to move forward with a request for proposal to operate a community farm on the town-owned parcel in East Lexington. Later in the week, Patch caught up with Recreation Director Karen Simmons to get the recreation reaction to the selectmen’s decision not to include a playing field on the nearly eight-acre parcel. Simmons said they’ll keep looking for land elsewhere in town, and consider some out-of-the-box ways of improving utilization of existing playing fields. Our Best of Patch Readers’ Choice poll this week sought your favorite place to work out in Lexington, and Get In Shape for Women edged out Fitness Together…

Week in Review: March 11 to March 17

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

In a way, last week began and ended with St. Patrick’s Day. And in between came a weighty School Committee meeting, the debut of our new Visions for Vacancies feature and a visit to the “Before I Die…” wall at Cary Memorial Library Monday morning started with the opening of our Best of Patch Readers’ Choice poll looking for the best place around Lexington to celebrate St. Paddy’s. The eventual winner, reveled on Friday, was Waxy O’Connors on Hartwell Avenue. That was followed by coverage of cultural critic Lewis Hyde’s presentation on idea ownership with Lexington Community Education and police logs that included idling, accidents and arrests for alleged domestic assault and battery. Tuesday dawned with a Small Business Spotlight on …

Week in Review: March 4 to March 10

Base tours, Busa Land plans, elections, arts and more this week in Lexington.

A very busy start to this week as Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray on Monday led a tour of Hanscom Air Force Base and then convened a meeting of his newly created Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force at MIT Lincoln Labs in Lexington. That night, the Board of Selectmen voted on uses for the town-owned Busa Farms property, opting for affordable housing and open space, which doesn’t close the door on either farming or recreation uses for the property. That decision is TBD. Tuesday was the annual Town Election, as well as Super Tuesday. Weidong Wang won a seat on the Housing Authority in the only contested race for elected office and Republican Mitt Romney and Jill Stein, a Lexington resident and Green Party presidential hopeful, easily …

Week in Review: Feb. 19 to 25

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

Coming off of the long, Presidents’ Day weekend, the schools started their vacation week and a few local teens got themselves into a bit of trouble. On Sunday night, police responded to a report of underage drinking at the Bridge School and found one kid lying down on the ground as his three friends attempted to flee the scene. After an ambulance arrived at the scene to check out the allegedly heavily intoxicated teen found on the ground, all four were released to their parents. And then late Monday night, police were called to a loud house party on Wood Street and, in the course of breaking up the party, arrested a Belmont teen for assault and battery on an officer and had a cruiser get dinged by a teen driving away. Throughout the week, …

Week in Review: Feb. 12 to Feb. 18

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

We started the week with Valentine’s Day on our minds and asked readers to share the object of their affection and what they love about Lexington. At Monday night’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, the house was too packed to talk about housing on the Busa Farms property, so that important discussion got continued to a date that’s yet to be determined. In other business that evening, the selectmen unanimously supported joining the state’s Group Insurance Commission, a move many called an important decision for the town’s financial future. The electric vehicle charging stations in the town lot behind the NStar building was in use early this week and an official ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for Monday, Feb. 27. Unfortunately, the town was…

Week in Review: Feb. 5 to Feb. 11

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

This week began looking backward. Patch readers awoke Monday morning to a photo gallery from a Friday afternoon ceremony in which Christopher Barry was promoted to the rank of lieutenant within the Lexington Police Department. Shortly thereafter, we asked folks to reflect on what was their favorite commercial during the disappointing Super Bowl 46.  Also on Monday, we asked Patch readers to reach even further back to remember where they were during the Blizzard of ’78, which occurred 34 years ago that day.  Tuesday dawned with a new business story featuring the recently opened Hair Cuttery salon in Lexington Center. Later in the day, Raising Lexington columnist Audra Myerberg weighed in with a suggestion that Valentine’s Day is an …

Week in Review: Jan. 22 to 28

Murder, special elections, Patriots, pets and personnel. A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

Good news started this week, as the New England Patriots survived the Baltimore Ravens to win the AFC Championship and earn a berth to Super Bowl XLVI and a chance for redemption against the New York Giants. If you too are Super Bowl bound, drop us a line. And stay tuned, because we’ll have more on this later today. A murder trial made news Monday as Craig Conkey, a man already incarcerated for the 1994 killing of a Lexington woman, pleaded “not guilty” to first-degree murder charges in connection with the previously unsolved 1992 slaying of Kathleen Dempsey. There was that story, plus video of Dempsey’s family’s reaction on Patch. The special election was the story on Tuesday. Lexington voters overwhelmingly passed a pair of debt …

Week in Review: Jan. 15 to 21

A look back at the week that was in Lexington.

This week began with celebrations of the memory of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as the Lexington CommUNITY group hosted its annual commemoration and march on Sunday afternoon. Monday was MLK Day and on Tuesday Superintendent of Schools Paul Ash surprised us all by appointing Laura Lasa as the next principal of Lexington High School. That night, the School Committee discussed the 2013 budget and cutting fees for full-day K, music and busing at Estabrook School during construction. Also on Tuesday, Police Chief Mark Corr shared some suggested New Year’s resolutions, Town Manager Carl Valente profiled the Tree Committee and Raising Lexington columnist Audra Myerberg expressed some LEGOS love. Amid all that other activity, Italian …
