The start of winter, a chance to win money for the schools, Santa spotting and more today in and around Lexington.

Combine School and Holiday Spirit: There's still time to get out the lights and holly and decorate your house for a chance to win $100,000 for the Lexington Public Schools in Patch's Deck the House contest. We're looking for the most decked-out house in all of Patchland and you have until Dec. 26 to nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. Five Things You Need to Know Today: Dec. 21

Winter solstice celebration, selectmen sit for three meetings in one, high school sports action and more today in Lexington.

1. Winter Solstice: The winter solstice is tonight, or actually, really early tomorrow morning. At 12:30 a.m. tomorrow, Dec. 22, when the North Pole is tilted 23.5 degrees away from the sun, marks the official start of winter and the longest night/shortest day of the year. Traditionally, celebrations are held around the workd in recognition of a return to light as the days will begin to grow longer through the summer solistice. In Lexington, Pilgrim Congregational Church will host a Longest Night Service beginning with an organ concert at 7 p.m.  2. Busy Board of Selectmen: The Board of Selectmen will essentially hold three meetings this evening, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Department of Public Works. First, the selectmen will receive an …
