Updated 4 p.m. -- The voting booths at Cary Hall, home to the polling locations for precincts 1 and 5, were completely empty just before 3 p.m. The good news, however, was that the voter turnout had hit triple digits. With that being said, election workers were not optimistic about hitting 200. Low turnout was reported throughout the day by voters around town. 1. Today in Town Government: According to the town website, there are no public meetings posted for today. Also, if you have outstanding business to take care of at a town office, get it done today, because they're all closed Monday in observance of New Years, which falls on Sunday. 2. Thursday, Dec. 15 was the first day on which candidates could pull papers to run in Lexington's annual Town Elections in March. By mid-afternoon, three had done so. And two of them had campaign websites set up.
Yesterday was the first day for candidates seeking elected office to pull papers in advance of Lexington’s March 6 town elections. By mid-afternoon, three candidates had signed on to see re-election, according to the Town Clerk’s office. Those candidates were current School Committee members Jessie Steigerwald and Mary Ann Stewart, the current chair, and Selectman Peter Kelley. Town Clerk Donna Hooper offers suggestions for dealing with "challenging" election year.
They say all politics is local, and that could be the case for Lexington voters in March 2012 if officials act on Town Clerk Donna Hooper's recommendation to hold annual Town Elections and the presidential primaries on the same day. Deciding who to vote for may not be the only challenge for Lexington in 2012, according to Hooper, who said school renovation work, newly drawn precinct boundaries and holidays are other potential factors affecting presidential and state primaries, the annual town election and the big one next November. Due to some of those elements, along with potential for cost savings, Hooper is recommending the town hold its annual election the same day as the presidential primary in March, provided that the latter is not …
