Commuter Shuttle to Connect Lexington Business Hub to Alewife

Pilot program supported by a federal grant secured by Lexington and the 128 Business Council.

A new commuter pilot shuttle will connect Lexington’s Hartwell Business District with the Alewife Red Line station after the town and the 128 Business Council landed a federal transportation grant to fund the program.

According to a press release from Lexington’s Economic Development Office, the Jobs Access and Reverse Commute grant cover about 80 percent of the cost of piloting a commuter shuttle quipped with wi-fi that will offer three trips during the Monday-Friday morning and evening commutes between Hartwell and Wiggins avenues in Lexington and the Alewife station in Cambridge. The remaining 20 percent of the cost was pledged by private property owners in the area, including Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Boston Properties, King Street Properties and Normandy Real Estate Partners.

“This grant enables a new transportation option for employees that is critical for connecting them to the employers in the Hartwell area,” said Melisa Tintocalis, the town’s Economic Development Director. “The shuttle will offer a refreshing alternative to commuting alone in a car and will serve as a great recruitment tool for employers drawing from the Cambridge-area workforce.”

The shuttle will be operated by the 128 Business Council, according to the press release.
